I love book to film adaptations. Apart from the select few which have been absolutely awful, most that I’ve seen I’ve really enjoyed and thought they did their paper based counterparts a lot of justice. When I’m reading a book, I often try and see it as a film in my head. I always pick actors and actresses to imagine as the characters and see the book play out – which might be a reason why I love film adaptations so much, because I’m very visual. I’ve read so many books but there’s been a few which I’ve closed and thought about how amazing it would be to see it on the big screen. Here are 5 books I would love to see as films!
The Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson-Walker
I’ve spoke to very few people who have read this book which is such a shame because I whole heartedly feel it deserves much more praise and hype than it has been given. I read it for the first time a good 3 years ago and after reading it cover to cover in a day, it instantly became one of my favourite books, ever. With such a unique storyline, I think The Age of Miracles would make a fantastic Sci-Fi film which could appeal to all ages, as the main protagonist is a young girl. If you have read this book, please leave me a comment so I can discuss it with you!
The Zig Zag Girl by Elly Griffiths
This book has all the vital elements of a gripping, gruesome and captivating crime thriller, combining a gorgeous setting, an interesting time-period, magic, mystery and likeable characters, The Zig Zag Girl would be absolutely effing fantastic as a movie. My dream cast for this that I imagined all the way through the book (and through the sequel, Smoke and Mirrors) includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Christian Bale and Jack Nicholson to name a few so the captivating mixture of characters and personalities that weave through this book would definitely make for an extremely interesting cast!
Will Grayson, Will Grayson by John Green and David Levithan
If you only know one thing about me, it’s probably that I absolutely adore John Green. Call me cliché, but I do and his books – particularly Looking for Alaska and Paper Towns spoke to me on a level I rarely experience with books. Will Grayson, Will Grayson, the joint work from John Green and David Levithan is an absolutely brilliant novel, told from two very different character points of views but whose lives end up intrinsically linked through, coincidence? Fate? If done right with the right cast, I think this book would make for a incredible and emotional film. I mean, they’ve already done The Fault in Our Stars, Paper Towns and soon to be Looking for Alaska. Can this one be next?
Every Day by David Levithan
And whilst we’re on the subject of David Levithan, I think his book Every Day would be a immensely intriguing by challenging move. For those that don’t know, Every Day is about a boy called A who, every single day wakes up inhibiting a different body. From boys, girls, all races, all lives – he doesn’t have a choice. I won’t say much more than that in case you want to read it for yourself but my gosh, it’s a one-of-a-kind novel and I think would leave an audience in about pieces by the end if it was a movie. The idea that through the entire film you’d be looking at ‘A’ but never really seeing him is super intriguing.
I Am the Messenger by Markus Zusak
After the success of The Book Thief movie, I think Markus Zusak’s other book, I Am the Messenger would also make a cracking film. The Book Thief is one of my favourite books of all time so I Am the Messenger had a lot to live up to but, despite being the same author, the books couldn’t be more different but saying that, I Am the Messenger is just as beautifully written. I think the incredibly unusual storyline would be fantastic on the big screen, as would the characters and the dog that features quite heavily in the book too!
I absolutely loved Age of Miracles. I think it must be almost 4 years ago that I read it (I was in Canada at that time). I really have to reread it sometime. I just haven’t had the time to do so (so many new books!).
Oh my god I’ve found someone!!! It is an incredible book right?!?!
Ooh I’ve never read any of these books! I’d love to see The Miniaturist as a film
I have that book on my shelf but not read it yet. I’ve heard LOTS of stuff about it though — mostly good but some bad so I’m intrigued!
Those books sound incredible! I think I will definitely be having a reading session soon, I think it is definitely needed! I particularly like the sound of The Zig Zag Girl, that sounds like an incredible book!
Love, Amie ❤

The Zig Zag Girl is amazing so gripping! Hope you enjoy it if you do get around to it (: xx
One book I’ve always thought would make a great film is Witi Ihimaera’s “Sky Dancer.” The storytelling and opportunities for incredible visuals are truly endless.
I’ve not heard of that but I will look it up on GoodReads! (: xx
It’s HELLA good! I’m surprised it’s not a more widely known novel. It’s by the same author who wrote “The Whale Rider”!
Will Grayson needs to be a movie! I agree with you on this one! <3

It so does right! I hope it will at some point in the future being as John Green books are so popular as movies!
I’ve never read any of these, but I loved The Book Thief. Definitely going to have a look out for I Am The Messenger.
Ooh if you loved TBT then I think you’ll love IatM! It’s just ugh so so so good! I can’t say anything else haha just READ ITTTTT
Every Day would be such an amazing movie or even TV show. I would definitelly watch it.
Ooh s TV show now THERE’S an interesting idea. Each episode as a different person?
Yep. It would be pretty cool because they would need to have a different actor playing A for each episode
Ahhh that would be AMAZING!
Will Grayson is one of my all time favourites, and yes, it would be so brilliant as a film!
It’s a beautiful book isn’t it?! I honestly think it would make a really successful film (: xx
Will Grayson, Will Grayson would definitely make a great movie! If done right of course. I haven’t read the other books, though I Am The Messenger is definitely on my tbr!
Yes the cast would have to be spot on. Who would you have as both Will’s? Ezra Miller as gay Will?
Oooh Ezra Miller would make a great gay Will! I haven’t really thought about a cast haha
I’d love to see Tiny Cooper in a movie!!! Totally agree on that one!
Awwww Tiny Cooper! 💗
Great post !
Thank you (: xx
I haven’t read The Age of Miracles but it sounds great, I’m going to put on my TBR wishlist and when I get round to it (it might take a few months!) I’ll come back to discuss!! 🙂
Ooh please do! I hope you like it as much as I did (: xx
I went to film school and we actually had to pitch an idea as a group and we decided to do a web series concept for Every Day. We planned on making it a sort of interactive series, with fans being able to win a role as A. However, it was difficult to pull off, because we probably would have to go against Levithan’s wishes and give A a permanent body at some point. That would include defining the gender and I have a feeling he wouldn’t have liked that.
WOW! That’s amazing and so interesting! (I swear you always comment with the most interesting stuff haha!) it’s such a great book and I completely agree I think it would have majorly gone against his wishes by giving A a permanent body. That’s why it would just be too difficult to make a film out of that book. Which is what makes it so special I guess? (: xx
I am happy you think my contributions are interesting. A lot of the time I just wonder if I ramble about the most random thing hahaha
And yes, I completely agree. That’s what makes it so special and unique!
They are interesting! Not at all I love listening to random ramblings (: xx
I think Children Shouldn’t Play With Dead Things by Martina McAtee will prove to be a very popular series ( he book is long and detailed) 🙂
I’ve not heard of that one but I’ll check it out on Goodreads. Long detailed books always tend to make good movie series! (: xx
