If you cut open my veins (what a charming way to start a post), you’d probably find fairy dust instead of blood. Disney is in my blood and I’ve loved it ever since I was 5 years old and my parents took me to Disneyland. Granted, I wasn’t big enough to go on much but I can imagine it was an very magical time. Like most Disney fans, the movies play a huge part in that childhood (and adulthood) passion. Today I want to talk about those movies which aren’t always raved about – like Frozen or The Lion King. The hidden gems. The ones that often get over-looked. I absolutely adore all of these movies and can’t believe they’re not rated as highly as some others!

The Hunchback of Notre Dame

This movie actually holds quite a special place in my heart because, going back to that first trip to Disneyland Paris when I was 5, one of the parades I saw had a Hunchback of Notre Dame part in it. We have it recorded on an ancient tape somewhere and it’s so cute and fun I can only imagine how much 5 year-old me was enjoying it. Also, the song Topsy Turvy that’s sung by the jester is one of my mum’s favourite Disney songs. I just love the entire film – I think it holds a lot of good messages too. Having been to Notre Dame too may make me love it that little bit more.

Brave

I’m not usually a huge fan of this “new age” Disney film – the ones where the animation is that little bit too good that it almost doesn’t feel like Disney anymore. But I was absolutely blown away by Brave and I definitely think it’s overlooked, particularly by Frozen. It’s got such a unique storyline and the most kick-ass heroine and I just love that this story is not centred around romantic relationships in any way, shape or form. It teaches you very different lessons and I think Merida is probably one of the best role-models for girls in the whole Disney franchise.

There are those who say fate is something beyond our command. That destiny is not our own, but I know better. Our fate lives within us, you only have to be brave enough to see it – Merida

The Goofy Movie

I just adore this film – it’s the one Disney film I actually remember watching when I was younger and I think this holds some of my first proper Disney memories. I don’t know whether it’s just me with a lame sense of humour but I found The goofy Movie so funny like, I’m embarrassed by how much I laugh at this stupid film! Again, it’s another of my mum’s favourites so that may play another part in why I love it so much. It’s such a fun film and of all of original characters, Goofy is definitely my favourite.

The Tigger Movie

Who doesn’t love Winnie the Pooh? Tigger has always been my favourite character from the Winnie the Pooh franchise and film about Tigger went down really well with me! I don’t ever hear this movie talked about to be honest – even my boyfriend won’t watch it because he thinks it’s too “new” and not proper Winnie the Pooh but I absolutely love it, I couldn’t count the amount of times I’ve seen it. It’s such a cute film and it teaches you a lot about friendship and who really matters. Plus, it hands out lots of helpful self-care advice like…

Dear Tigger, just a note to say: Dress warmly. Eat well. Stay safe and sound. Keep smiling. We’re always there for you. Signed, Your Family

What are your favourite underrated Disney movies? Do you agree with any of those I have mentioned?

  1. I used to love the Hunchback of Notre Dame, even though it did scare me a teeny tiny bit. Actually, I think The Aristocats is REALLY underrated, no exaggeration I used to watch that film every day for a year when I was little, I was just obsessed!

  2. I loved the Goofy Movie. The Leaning Tower of Cheesa <— so gross!! My fave underrated Disney movie is The Black Cauldron. It's darker than the average Disney movie, but a really cool adventure story. Also, I LOVE The Sword in the Stone and The Emperor's New Groove.

  3. YES! Hunchback is one of my favorite Disney movies! It’s just so beautiful and the songs oh my God! *goes to watch it again…*

  4. I love Tigger with all my heart, so my brother once gave me The Tigger Movie for Christmas. It’s such a lovely and heart-warming film. I absolutely agree. And Brave! Even though the voices in my head sound Scottish hours after watching it, it is beautiful.

  5. I don’t really do Disney in general far too happy clappy for my tastes (hehe) but I did love Brave and Maleficent was brilliant aswell and is actually the only Disney movie I own!

  6. I have a funny story about the Goofy Movie – a well meaning friend gave us a copy of when my daughter was about 4. For some reason she found it utterly terrifying – I have no idea why. There only way I could calm her down was by putting on her favourite Doctor Who episode ( the one with the Daleks and the cyber men) – which would probably freak out a normal 4 year old!

  7. I love this post Jenny! And Merida is the Princess my 8 year old daughter wants to be! Even bought her a bow and arrow after she watched it! It’s so true that she is the best role model, she’s not about beauty or love or money, she’s real and agree totally that she got over shadowed by Frozen. Real shame! Hope they do another!
