I really love doing fun and personal posts every now and again and I recently stumbled upon Gabriella’s video about ’10 things she would save in a fire‘. This video was intended to be done as a video ‘tag’ but as you’re well aware that I definitely, 100% do not do YouTube I decided to make it into a blog post instead! But credit to Gabby for creating the tag in the first place and you can find her video here. I really enjoyed doing this and thinking of the items I would save; it really makes you realise what is sentimental to you and what isn’t and I was surprised by some of my choices. So let’s assume every human in my house is clever enough to get out themselves, with everything left, here’s the 10 things I would save If my house was on fire *but touch wood it won’t be*.

1 & 2: My dog (Rory) & Brown Teddy

Of course my dog would be the first thing I would save if, for arguments sake, he hadn’t got out already. I would like to think my dog is clever enough to run away from fire but seriously, who knows with him. I don’t know what I’d do without my dog so he would be number one priority on my list. Coming in at a solid number 2 is my teddy, Brown Teddy. His name is in fact, Brown Teddy because I was ever the imaginative child but I love this bloody teddy so much; my granddad gave him to my mum when she was in the hospital with me – he was sitting on a little table with a Vitamin D T-shirt on, promoting something or another when my granddad pinched him and voila, he was mine. He has quite literally come all over the world with me from Tenerife, Spain, France, Disneyland. He’s a well travelled bear.

3 & 4: My nan’s necklace & The Book Thief

From 3 until 10 aren’t going to be in any particular order now, as my dog and Teddy were my priorities, everything else will just be a grab and run job. Next is a necklace that belonged to my nan. She didn’t give it to me personally, I think my mum had it and told me it was my nan’s so I wore it quite a bit when I was a teenager but I just know it belonged to her and it would be a nice thing to keep and have a part of her with me. I would also save my copy of The Book Thief. Now, I could have quite easily used up my remaining 8 spaces with all my favourite books but I decided against it and just grabbed my absolute favourite of them all, which is The Book Thief. I also love the irony of the fact that I’m saving it from a fire when the Nazi’s regularly burn books in fire’s during the story.

5 & 6: Peter Pan canvas and Pride & Prejudice paper rose

Now these are going to be kinda sappy (well, one of them is) and I’m not a fan of sap so I’ll keep it short and sweet. The Peter Pan canvas was a gift from my boyfriend one Christmas and I wouldn’t save it necessarily because it’s from him, it’s just so, so beautiful. It’s really big and it’s exceptionally detailed and it’s so magical. The rose was one of the first things my boyfriend ever bought me, it’s made from pages of a Pride and Prejudice book. Although neither of us have read the book or seen the film (and probably never will, to be honest!), I would save it because of it’s sentimental value to me.

7 & 8: Nico Rosberg helmet replica & Disney books

If you follow me on Twitter you will know I love my formula 1 and I would definitely save my half-scale Nico Rosberg helmet replica because it was the first Formula 1 “thing”, I ever got bought. My boyfriend surprised me with this as well for my birthday, during my first full and “proper” year of following the sport when Nico was driving and he was my favourite driver. The books are a set of 4 very old Disney books, with all the old classics in them with illustrations. These were my mum’s when she was younger, I don’t know who gave them to her but she’s given them to me and for that reason – and also the fact that they’re Disney, they would 100% be getting saved.

9 & 10: Scrapbook & The Chronicles of Narnia

Similarly to the Disney books, these Chronicles of Narnia books were also my mum’s when she was little. They are her favourite ever books and these copies are so old and sun-worn but I love them and have always kept them on my shelf. I’ve only read the 1st and 2nd one myself but the books themselves hold a lot of value to me. Last thing I would save is this big scrapbook that my best friend Lynsey made me with photos and jokes and personal things in it. It obviously took a lot of time and effort and I love it because it’s not really anything other than “memories” and that’s what I love about it.

Question of the day: I would love to know which items you would want to save if your house was burning down. Leave me a comment and let me know what items have sentimental value to you and why you would save them!

  1. As long as my whole family and all my pets were safe I would probably grab my phone and laptop (I know such a millennial) because they have all my photos and memories on them 🙂 I would grab the charm bracelet I received from my parents for my 16th Birthday and my scrapbook 🙂 lastly if I had time I would grab some of my favourite books and movies 🙂 xx

  2. Well I have two dogs and two rabbits so that’s 4 already! I won’t count my family, since they’re all old enough to get themselves out! My childhood teddy and laptop with my life’s work on it! Well, since I have some left I guess I’ll get my parents and sister!

  3. Such a fun post! I would save (obviously providing my partner and son were safe) all of my son’s baby pictures because I do not know what I would do if I lost them! (well, I do probably cry.)

  4. Great post Jenny, does make you think!
Apart from the family and Jess the dog (suspect she’d be the one to alert us to be honest) not really sure. I have so many books, all loved but not work risking my life over. I have some lovely prints i might grab including some limited edition ones and the last gift my grandmother ever gave me, oh and framed prints of the kids. There are some sentimental bits i might grab too but i think I’ll be ladened with paintings 😂

  5. I don’t have a dog or a cat, sadly, so no pets to save. I do have a very cute ladybird hot water bottle that sits on my bed – especially in the cold weather – so I’d probably grab that instead. One of the first considerations would have to be my hubby as he sleeps through everything and he would be in the most danger in a fire! Of course my daughters too but they’d probably escape before us oldies. My laptop as it has all my writing on it! My jewellery, I have several sentimental pieces which I would hate to lose, and my favourite photos on my desk. I’d love to grab lots of books, and like you The Book Thief is one of my favs, but I fear if I did I might not survive and I certainly wouldn’t get my six foot sleepy hubby out.

      1. I think my hubby is a special case!! He once fell asleep in a nightclub and he woke up seated in a chair with half his moustache shaved off! That gives you an idea how deep he sleeps. A cold bucket of water would be needed! But with extra time I’d grab my orchids, and cactus, love them. 🙂

  6. This is such a great idea for a post! My dog and my teddy (named pinky as it’s a pink bear, I’m as imaginative with names as you!) are the first two things I’d save as well! Finn, my pup, wouldn’t be able to run away from the fire as he sleeps in a crate with the door shut (because he eats everything when left unattended!) so I’d grab pinky and grab Finn!

    1. Thank you very much! I too love more personal posts from bloggers every now and again (: Oh it’s just out of this world, isn’t it? There’s no way I’d leave my copy behind! xx

  7. What a lovely post idea! I really enjoyed reading this, it’s clear you’re quite sentimental. I am too, I have no idea where to start in terms of saving things, probably anything family members had bought me and memories from my travels when I was much younger 🙂

    1. Thank you (: Yes, I am very sentimental. “Things” don’t mean an awful lot to me, like bags, clothes, shoes, gadgets etc. But anything that holds value like gifts or heirlooms or something I would much rather save because they have infinite value! xx

    1. I loved Gabby’s video but I wouldn’t never do a video. Wasn’t sure how well it was going to translate into a blog post to be honest but I think I did okay! That’s a great idea 🙂 xx

  8. Aw I love this! Your dog is so cute and I love that scrapbook!

Oooh it’s a hard question, I’d try and save my camera (it’s like my baby), my laptop and tbh I can’t think of anything else I would save…I have baby books my parents created when I was born so I’d love to save those and lots of old photo albums which I love to look at!

    Abs x

    1. Thank you (: I know he’s so bloody cute, I’d never leave him behind anywhere! Although, he’s strangely not scared of fires or fireworks so I don’t know if he’d even be phased hahaha! Saving one of the baby books sounds nice! xx

    1. Thanks so much and I knowwwww isn’t he adorable?! Bloody nuisance though and eats EVERYTHING. Yeah, in a time like that, I probably wouldn’t think twice about typical “stuff” like extra clothes or my purse or anything. That can all be replaced at the end of the day! xx

  9. I often think about what I’d save in an emergency and the longer I think about it the more things I think I’d need to take with me, jewellery, certain clothes you can’t get anymore, sentimental items, my laptop-due to the sheer amount of pending work I’ve got on it, but then in reality I think I’d be in such a panic I’d forget everything and just want to make sure I got out unharmed!

  10. Such a cute post, Jenny! Your dog is absolutely adorable and I’m not surprised that he’d be the first thing you’d save in a fire! Those fluffy white ears – awwww! My dogs would also come top of my list! In terms of books, I’d probably also save my beautiful edition of the Chronicles of Narnia, and my illustrated edition of the Complete Works of Shakespeare!

  11. I don’t like thinking about house fires too often; my grandparents house burned down (long before I was born, my mum was still a teen!) and my aunty only just escaped. It was horrific, and growing up hearing that story has made me completely paranoid. But if ever such a thing were to happen to me, I’d definitely save my cat, Harley, my stuffed rabbit, Roo, my memory box (with all the mementos of the six years I’ve spent with my soon to be husband), the only photo I have of the two of us together, the ruby ring that was passed down through the family and I’d like to pass on to my own daughter one day, the Amsterdam clogs my partner bought me back on his first ever works visit to head office, my collection of really old, falling apart children’s books that I’ve been saving for my own children, my favourite book (Prozac Nation), my photo album of our cat, and my photo album of other photos!

    1. Bloody hell that sounds awful! But at least everyone was safe and nobody was hurt, that’s the main thing that they’re here to tell the story! But it’s such a shame. Touch wood it never happens for either of us! I love the things you’d save – especially the Ruby ring, that’s adorable!

  12. Snap, The Book Thief is my favourite book as well! The amount of tears I shed when I read that, I’d have the fire put out in minutes.

  13. I’m an absolute hoarder, so if there was a fire it would probably take me too long to A: sort out what I actually wanted to save from the clutter, B: actually free it from amidst the rest of my stuff.

My cat would definitely be top of the list though… Not sure he’d notice a fire, as lazy as he is.

    1. Let’s give you 15 minutes for arguments sake! I am probably the opposite of you – I hate keeping stuff and anything I can throw away I will! I’m sure a cat would be clever enough to realise there’s a fire… hopefully!

  14. I don’t have a ton of sentimental things thanks to a bunch of international moves but I have some. Of course, my pictures! Most are not digital and would need rescuing. My dog tags. Weird, I know but still. How much time do I have? Can I still grab my writing notebooks?
