My experience with Yoga *

Ever since I was diagnosed with anxiety, I’ve been super interested in yoga. I was made aware that it can help with your mental health and I was keen to try anything that might have an impact. Luckily for me, yoga did have an impact and I still practice it today, regardless of my mental state. I would recommend yoga to anyone and there are so many different types which benefit so many different elements of health and wellbeing. I wanted to talk about my own personal experience with yoga and the benefits I’ve found its made to my life.

It’s taught me how to breathe properly: Breathing is important… Obviously. But it’s amazing how often we actually don’t breathe properly which can have a negative impact on us. Yoga has taught me to breathe deeper, slower and in a more correct rhythm.

It got me into exercise again: I was put off exercise completely when I got anxiety, unfortunately. I was terrified of getting hot and sweaty and passing out. You name it, I was scared of it happening! But yoga eased me back into light exercise which I am so grateful for.

It made me more aware of my body: It made me realise what areas I needed to work on it terms of flexibilty and which areas of my body are tighter and painful in certain positions. It helps you tune in to you. And its an incredible feeling when you do so.

It helps me tune out: When I say tune out, I mean tune out of the outside world and tune in to me and the present moment. There’s nothing like blocking out everything else in your life and just focusing on your breathing, your positions and how your body is feeling.

Its made me more grateful: This is a funny one and I don’t know how it’s done so, but yoga has made me more grateful for health for my own body and for having the ability to move it freely each day. It’s made me more in tune with the earth and everything in it.

There are so many different ways to practice yoga. Through books, podcasts, YouTube videos or DVD’s. And so many different types of yoga to practice. Everyone is different when it comes to yoga. Everyone needs different things from it and needs to focus on different parts of their body and mind to get the most out of it. One of the best ways to do that, is by going to a class or a yoga lesson with a qualified, professional teacher who understand your needs and can extract the most from your lesson to benefit you. It can be daunting finding qualified yoga teachers which will fit in with your personal needs but Bidvine is a great way to do just that!

    That line ” helps me tune out” actually makes a lot of sense. After all, Yoga is all about exploring your inner dimension by cutting out the outer. Good post 🙂

    1. Do you go to a class or do it at home? Important thing about yoga is that is absolutely does not matter what anyone else is doing – yoga is for YOU to go at your own pace and do what feels right for you which will be different for everyone (: xx

      1. I actually do it at work, there’s a few of us that do it during lunch. I think I just need to really get into it, a lot of the time I’m too cautious as to who is around me xx

  5. Great post Jenny! 🙂 Im glad that is has worked out so well for you. You finding Yoga to help with your anxiety. This is actually what happend to me when first introduced to Yoga. I had severe depression and anxiety, Yoga made me feel much better. The breathing is a huge issue when we have panic attacks so that helped me out a lot as well.

      1. Yes, thats the key to everything. Breath is Prana, your lifeforce! 🙂 I struggled a lot in the beginning before I knew what benefits Yoga would give me, to breathe properly. Just using the throat area when I had anxiety and also the lungs. Now I breathe into my stomach, you also release a lot of toxins activating your breath 🙂

  6. Great post! I too suffer from anxiety. More specifically anxiety about driving and I live two hours from most of my family. I also have anger issues. Yoga has helped with both tremendously! When I feel like I’m getting upset about anything I can bring breathing techniques and meditation into my life because of yoga. That also applies to when I feel anxious about a trip I’m about to take. I also find myself more grateful!! I think it’s the mantra at the end of each class of “the light in my honors the light in you” that helps me be more grateful for life in general as well as the over awareness you have of your body after slowly breathing through every stretch of the muscles in your body. Great post!

  15. Hi Jenny! I can totally relate to this article of yours, as I too had inculcated the practice of Yoga in my daily routine to do away with anxiety and stress.
    It’s been a decade now that I am into Yoga, and the state of my physical and mental health has seen great improvements.
    I would recommend Yoga to anybody who wants to experience a healthy body and mind.

    Secondly, I don’t have clinical anxiety but I do get easily stressed out and anxious when my exams are nearing or anything and I also find yoga to be of an immense help!     1. Oh it SO is! I know and understand that it’s not for everyone and won’t work for everyone but I’d always encourage people (especially with anxiety) to at least try it!

    I do transcendental meditation twice a day. Maharishi school teaches this technique though I don’t often go to the groups. I probably prefer my spiritual practice done solo mostly. Once people organize these things it seems more about money and power.

    1. I think it depends who’s organising them. It’s definitely not all about money but if you have a talent in a field and you want to teach people, you should get paid for that.

    I once tried yoga for while. It made me feel great but unfortunately I moved away and the classes around me cost the earth!

    1. Buy some DVD’s or find YouTube videos! They can be just as good and cost a fraction of the price.
