This month saw a huge bunch of talented, hard-working people graduate from university. If you’re on social media, all you need to do is scroll for a few minutes before you’ll see the graduation gowns, hats being thrown in the air and the end-of-university-and-graduation celebrations. It’s an amazing time for uni graduates; after 3, 4 or even more years of hard work, meeting deadlines and having to juggle living out of home with limited finances to get by on, it’s all paid off and it’s time to start the next, exciting chapter in their lives. But what about the rest of us?

I didn’t go to university and whilst I do have regrets, I am still very much an advocate for the mentality that you don’t need university to be successful. And you don’t. That’s absolutely correct. At a time of the year where people are heavily focused on qualifications and degrees and which ones people have achieved, it’s hard to remember that sometimes.

Just because you didn’t go to university doesn’t mean you’re not as successful, talented, hard-working and smart as those that did. We’re all on our own paths and journeys, some of us will require a degree (I sure as heck ain’t seeing a doctor who hasn’t got a degree in medicine!), some of us won’t. But whichever way you swing, it’s so important not to belittle anyone else’s achievements. Don’t dull someone else’s sparkle – we can all be celebrated.

I’d also just like to mention how times have changed and people can make careers and make money online these days. But some people will not understand that. There will always be people stuck in the old fashioned mind set that you need to go to school, go to university, get a degree then get a degree based job in order to be successful. That is so far from the truth now but some people will always be stuck in that mind set. You can be anything you want to be, with a degree or without one. I admire everyone who has a degree, has gone to university for however long, even those doing Open University courses. I’m all for education. But I’m also all for hard work in whatever sector, creativity, big dreams, trying new things, taking chances and going against the tide.

I didn’t go to university. I wish I did. I didn’t follow the career path I truly wanted. I wish I did. I developed such extreme anxiety that it put a stop in my tracks. I wish it didn’t. But that’s the hand I was dealt and I’m still proud of myself.

I’m proud of:

– Starting my own online business (Neverland Blog Tours) and growing it until a point where I’m booked up 6 months in advance.

– Starting my own blog and working hard on it and growing it to over 7k followers on Twitter, 3k blog followers and almost 140k page views.

– Working with brands; bakerdays and Songfinch and having brands contact me because they want to work with me. Because I am a valuable member of the blogging community (as are you!) and they recognise that.

– Being a book reviewer and having books sent to me from such an early part of my blogging life. Having authors and publishers wanting you to review their books and trusting that that book is going into good hands.

– Raising over £900 for Cancer Research UK when I did a sponsored readathon in 2014, which I managed and organised all on my own with no help.

– Battling anxiety every single day since October 2011. Constant ups and downs and changes in the tide. Anxiety attacks, panic attacks, extreme nerves, not being able to leave the house. But I did it. And I’m here.

– Being a good person. Working hard and helping others where I can. Always thinking of others, mostly before myself and being resilient when I could have crumbled.

What are you proud of? I want this post to be positive as HELL so leave me a comment and tell me what you’re most proud of yourself for! Encourage others!

  1. Jenny you accurately express the notion that University is not everything in the world. I,myself made an honorable attempt at going to university however at the time there were no supports whereabouts, I was not able to complete 1 entire season. Still, I found your post to be very helpful in proving that believing in yourself can take you many places.

  2. I am proud of you for your accomplishments, and I agree with everything that you have written!! Well done, lady friend! I am proud of myself for recently graduating, for receiving my TEFL/TESOL, for battling my anxiety daily, and for my perseverance. It takes a lot of guts to put yourself out there and focus on tasks when you have to battle with your mind everyday. Keep on keeping on 😊 you are doing wonderful things ❤️🌞🌻💪🏽

    1. Thanks so much! You totally get how it feels then to try and go about your life and achieve things when anxiety is riddling your mind every second of the day. It’s bloody hard! So hats off to you (: xxx

  3. You should be proud of yourself. You follow your own inner light. Good luck through good times and bad. Some people will be jealous of your courage and such people rare come out openly to detract from you. Good luck just for today x

      1. Good luck this week. Sorry if I seemed rude last week. I did actually agree with you and I appreciated your having a strong and thought out reply

  4. Thank you for this ,I’m awaiting my A levels.
    Things I’m proudest of is:
    Becoming happy in myself.
    Completing my A level.
Becoming more suitable in my fashion habits.
    Getting over my anxiety.
Still volunteering with GirlGuiding UK where I’ve been for six years.

  5. As a teacher in America, this is something I struggle with daily. The schools push college on our kids from the age of 5 as if it is the ONLY option for them! But many kids either don’t have the tools they need to be successful at a university, or don’t NEED a university in order to pursue a career that makes them happy. I’m happy for you that you’ve come to terms with your decision and allowed yourself to be proud of your other accomplishments! I wish more people in your position were writing things like this to show our kids that you don’t have to go into debilitating debt in order to be successful and happy.

    1. Ugh that must be SO frustrating! I’m not from the US and this might be a bit of a tainted view of things but in American TV shows, the kids are always going on about college but even more so, it always seems like the parents are the ones who are always pushing their kids to go to college or like they’ll die if they dont. It’s incredibly frustrating! xx

  6. What an unlifting post! to be honest I’ve been feeling like such a failure lately and it’s been so hard to get out of that mindset. I’m trying to think of the things I’m proud of about myself but it’s not quite working… Maybe I should do a post like this in future! With your permission though, of course 😀

  7. What a wonderful post! You are spot on when you say uni isn’t the only way to make it anymore. Hard work and determination pay off, and you don’t need a degree. I was made to feel very much like uni was the only option by my grandparents, but my mental health put a stop to uni and I dropped out. I’m proud of myself for fighting back against my mental health problems, getting into a good job that I love, starting my own blog and growing it well, and getting to a point in my life where I’m relatively happy and settled (most of the time!)

  8. Great post chick! You are right about education and there are those of us that weren’t able to continue due to personal reason but like you said there is the OU and I went that route in my 30s so it is never too late to do whatever you want to do, regardless of what it is.

You have every reason to be proud of yourself xx

  9. you should be very proud of yourself! You have accomplished amazing things. I have anxiety now since 2007 and I get how hard it can be. I never had it till I was 27 and OMG it is sooo difficult to even leave the house somedays.

  10. Congrats on being proud of you, we often forget that part 🙂 I’m proud of you for writing this post! 🙂 And I proud of myself for not giving up on my fight against anxiety, agoraphobia, and depression. I’m proud of myself for getting admitted into a publishing program, I’m proud of myself for allowing myself to dream and make things happen again, even if some days are difficult and riddled with doubt. I am proud to have started yoga again and started to add fitness sessions to my life. I’m proud of every little step 🙂

      1. Take it easy – go slow and steady and your own pace and you’ll soon get back into the swing of it. That’s the beautiful thing with yoga – everyone goes at their own pace xxx
