For my birthday this year, my boyfriend and I visited Paradise Wildlife Park for the afternoon. Although somewhere I’ve been more times than I could count, I always enjoy going to Paradise because for me, it’s a form of nostalgia. It’s a place my parents used to take me when was I very little and although obviously it’s been updated a lot over the years, the majority of the format of the park is the same. It’s cute and quaint and a lovely day out – so although it wasn’t an extravagant birthday (just a zoo and a Dominos!) I really enjoyed it and wanted to share some photos and a little bit about the park with you today!

Paradise Wildlife Park is in Hertfordshire, so only about a 40 minute drive from my house. As zoo’s go, it’s pretty small. It only takes a couple of hours maximum to get around (especially as an adult because there’s a lot of children’s play areas in the park) but there’s plenty to see and do and a big variety of animals, talks and feeds that you can watch too which go on throughout the entire day. If you’re planning on a full day there, it’s well worth checking the map for the feed times so you can plan when you need to be at each enclosure. I’ve watched a few of the feeds before and they’re very good – especially the Tigers.

Unfortunately when we arrived it was raining so a lot of the animals situated in the “Woodland Walk” area of the park were hiding from the rain. But then you enter the “main” area of the park where the enclosures are a lot more open and visible to the public. Thankfully at this point, it stopped raining too. We spent ages watched the cute little Meerkats and the small monkeys in the indoor “rainforest” enclosure. It was also nice to see they had some new areas, like a walk through to get closer the wallabies and the emu’s and an indoor area that housed a large anaconda and various other snakes and lizards.

The main attractions at Paradise Wildlife Park have to be the impressive selection of big cats. We were lucky enough to see the male Lion roar and my gosh, it is loud! And we also saw two Snow Leopards having a play, which was nice! They also have this lovely little cafe which directly overlooks the Tiger enclosure, so we stopped their for a drink and found a seat right at the front, where we could see the Tigers sleeping. Another new part of the park was the stunning statue of “The Clockwork Lion”, which symbolises the rapid decline in Lions in the wild, due to poaching and the fact that time is running out for them. It really packs a punch, as it’s made with all clock parts.

I know some people are opposed to zoo’s and wouldn’t visit one and I appreciate that and I appreciate everyone’s views. Personally, I love the zoo and would only ever visit a zoo I knew was up to standard. The staff at Paradise are so knowledgable (as demonstrated by the girl who did the Red Panda talk) so I trust Paradise Wildlife Park and always have a lovely day out there whenever I go.

Where are your favourite places to visit for the day? Are you a zoo fan or not? And what’s your favourite animal? Let’s chat!

  1. That clockwork statue is such a good way to introduce a topic like that in a fun way. I have been to zoo’s and enjoyed it but I haven’t bee to one in a few years as I am unsure how I feel about them. I think ultimately some animals wouldn’t be around had there not been conservation and breeding in captivity in this way. On the other hand, zoo’s compete and some enclosure’s are not up to scratch. This looks like a great day out though and I think most UK zookeepers are honestly just trying to make the animals’ lives better.

  2. I absolutely love going to zoos and wildlife parks! This post is amazing with some truly stunning shots!!! I run a wildlife blog and if you’ve got some spare time I’d love to hear what you think!!

  3. I really enjoyed your blog today. I love going to the zoo, I always seem to end up at either Shepreth or Colchester, but your photographs have shown me that Paradise Wildlife Park is worth a visit – they have something that neither Shepreth or Colchester have – camels! Thank you for sharing.

  4. Jenny your photos are so beautiful, especially the portraits of the lion and the tiger (perhaps I’m biased as I love big cats) but also how cute is the otter?! I’m glad you had such a lovely day out. I haven’t gone to the zoo near me for ages because I just don’t think it’s good enough and it makes me sad for the animals, but there’s a safari park nearby which is a lot better. I went for my wedding anniversary (as all adults do haha) and it was so cool to get to see all the animals, like baby lion cubs and an elephant (my favourite animal!) Thanks so much for sharing your pics!

  5. Such a great place to visit and those meerkats are sooooo sweet. Lucky you! I always love being surrounded by animals as they are so adorable.

  6. I love zoos, as long as I can tell that the zoo keepers obviously care a lot about the animals at the zoo, and they are kept well. My favourite two zoos are Cotswold Wildlife Park, which is only about 50 mins drive from me so something of a regular, and West Midlands Safari Park which is awesome because you can get really up close and personal with the animals on safari, and then see some more (like meerkats and penguins) in the zoo area! I love zoos that have anacondas, I find them so fascinating. CWP have an anaconda, but WMSP don’t 🙁 I’ll definitely be adding Paradise Wildlife Park to my list of zoos to visit as it looks great – especially with all the big cats!

    1. Ooooh I went on the Severn Valley Railway a few weekends ago and that goes straight past West Midlands Safari Park and we saw some Rhinos, Deer and Elephants from the train! I’d love to actually go there although it’s bloody Hours from where I live! I’m yet to do a Safari (: xxx

  7. Lovely post & such beautiful photography! I especially love your photo of the camel! I love camels <3 Paradise Wildlife Park sounds like a wonderful little zoo. I am a zoo biology graduate so I love zoos! Lots of people are opposed to them, but the good ones can do a lot of wildlife conservation and education, so that's fantastic! It sounds like you had an awesome birthday (Happy Birthday!) x

  8. I visited Paradise Wildlife Park not too long ago and I had such a fantastic time! Your photos of the animals are gorgeous, I wish I’d been able to capture them half as well!! The woodland walk was one of my favourite parts of the trip, especially with the reindeer and the wolves around that area as well! So glad that you got to visit such a fab place for your birthday (a Dominos is a great choice too hehe!)

  9. I’m always undecided on zoos and love the open ones where they are free to roam in such a large place. It does sound like the animals are well looked after here, and I’m glad you had such a lovely day xx

  10. For me, a wildlife park and a dominos sounds like a corker of a day! Im the same and will only ever visit places I know are fair to the animals and know what they are doing, I personally love seeing the animals but I am fully aware some places are just not fit for them. Sounds like a lovely place!

  11. I don’t often visit zoos in England at all except when I visit my boyfriend on holidays because he works at a zoo in Norwich! I love learning more about animals. One of the best zoos I’ve visited was Berlin and it was amazing and the aquarium was breathtaking x

  12. I’m always in two minds about zoos. I think a lot are very good and have wellfare and conservation at the forefront. We’re lucky to live 20 minutes drive from Longleat, which I love because when you drive through the safari, it’s you who are in the cage (car) and the animals are roaming free! Sounds like Paradise is another good one to visit, glad you had a lovely day there, X

    1. I haven’t been to Longleat but it’s one on my agenda! It’s quite far from me so that’s the only thing stopping me going to be honest. I haven’t done a Safari park yet xxx

  13. I will go to wildlife parks and zoos that I know have made good efforts in conservation- when they are actually saving and helping animals I have no problem with them! I think people are wrong to tar all zoos with one brush- a lot are working so hard to save endangered animals. Those big cats are so stunning, really beautiful. Also, is it me or does that camel look like he/she just told you a joke? 😀

    1. Yeah I totally agree Isabel; I mean YES an animal should be in the wild… but there won’t be any animals in the wild at this rate if zoos and conservation charities don’t step in. Haha he was pretty funny (; xxx

  14. I loved this post Jenny and I am glad you had a super day out! I’ve only been to one Zoo but it was in another country and they were really cruel to their animals but I’d like to go to one were thy are looked after. Loved your photos of the animals especially the meerkats! They were so cute!

    1. Awh that’s a shame. I find zoos in the UK are SO bloody good. I’m sure there’s a few that aren’t but the ones I’ve been too are absolutely brilliant, their facilities and knowledge xxx

  15. Firstly, I want to say that your photographs are absolutely stunning. Secondly, I’m always torn on zoos! On the one hand I know it’s unfair to the animals, but knowing the effort the zoos I choose to visit (very rarely, mind you, because I can never afford travelling to one and don’t have a car!) put towards conservation etc does make me feel a little better. I hope you had a nice birthday! It seems lovely.

    1. Thank you (: and yeah I see your point. But a lot of zoos take such good care of the animals and although it’s not their natural environment – which is obviously a shame – it’s got to the point where zoos are probably a necessity for some animals because poaching is so bad. I’ve been to a few zoos where you literally have to drive around it because the grounds and enclosures are so big (not a safari- it has roads, like a town!) and I think that’s brilliant (: xxx

      1. Oh yeah I totally agree! I understand how important and helpful zoos can be and I do enjoy them! And yes, I love bigger zoos! I live literally like down the road from a huge safari park too and I loved visiting as a child

  16. This looks like so much fun, I’m glad you enjoyed it. Your photos are gorgeous 🙂

  17. I too enjoy visiting zoo’s, my favorite are orangutans! The clockwork lion looks fascinating, I will make a note to visit next time I’m near London – thanks for sharing and happy birthday!

    1. Orangutan’s are incredible aren’t they? None at this one unfortunately but there is one in Colchester Zoo which is very impressive. Also, Howlett’s Wildlife Park in Kent is got an amazing collection of primates. If you’re ever nearby (;
