If you’re a book blogger or just an avid reader, you’ll know the struggle. The struggle of buying too many books when you already have far too many sitting on your shelf. The struggle of a publisher asking you if you’d like to review x, y or z and knowing you don’t really have time but you can’t quite resist. The struggle of not being able to leave the library empty handed because it feels like you’re committing a crime. I know, I feel you. I am that person. There are so many books sitting on my bookcase and have been sitting there for months – some even years – which although I always say I’m going to read, I never do. So here are 10 books on my bookcase which I really want to finally get around to reading this year!
The Atlantis Gene by A.G Riddle
This is one that’s been sitting there for ages and ages and although it’s not usually my genre, I’ve always thought this book sounded fascinating so I really want to get stuck in soon and see if it’s my sorta thang or not!
The Dry by Jane Harper
I won this last year (I think) and I haven’t read it yet, sighhhhhh. It’s a gorgeous hardback copy – which I love and I’ve heard a few people mention how good it is.
The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena
I bought this one for my mum for her birthday last year because she said she’d been seeing posters for it on the way to work. She absolutely loved it but it’s been sitting on my shelf since!
The Trouble With Goats and Sheep by Joanna Cannon
This had so much hype when it was released, as did her next novel Three Things About Elsie and I’ve heard so many wonderful things about both. I also bought this for my mum last year as a gift, she’s read it (and loved it) and I obviously haven’t. Boo.
The Foster Child by Jenny Blackhurst
I can only apologize profousley for this one as this was a review copy which was sent to me which I haven’t read yet (although I didn’t ask for it or agree to any blog tour but I still feel bad).
Travelling to Infinity by Jane Hawkin
The book which was the inspiration behind the film, ‘The Theory of Everything’, I picked this up on a whim when I was at the Severn Valley Railway last year in one of the station book shops.
The Three by Sarah Lotz
This has been sitting on my shelf for an inexcusable amount of time. The premise sounds outstanding, I’ve heard amazing things but have I read it? No. Something’s been stopping me but I vow to read it this year!
Confessions of a Conjurer by Derren Brown
I bought this book for my boyfriend (who’s a magician) like, 2/3 years ago now? I don’t know why because he doesn’t read. But I love Derren Brown so I definitely wanna read this one myself and only realised it last month!
George by Alex Gino
Another one which I won around a year ago (about the same time as I won The Dry, actually) which I still. haven’t. read. my gosh I am awful. This wouldn’t usually be my kind of book but I’m always up for expanding my reading!
Bad Sister by Sam Carrington
I think I won this some time late last year and I’ve been super excited about reading it but I just haven’t got around to it yet, despite the gloriously bright pink spine standing out on my shelf!
I’ve never heard of any of these books so I will have to have a look xx

Wow really?!
A great selection of books there, I still haven’t finished the two I started like a year ago!
Amy | hookedonthemusic.com
Oh no haha! xxx
I have so many books I want to finish. I haven’t read any of these.
A Sparkle Of Grace
You must, MUST, read The Dry and The Couple Next Door asap! They are the best, I read them both last year and loved them. I know you won’t be disappointed.
Thanks for the recommendations!
We have such different book tastes! I’ve not actually heard of any of these before – but I now want to read The Atlantis Gene and Travelling to Infinity!
I’m still yet to read either!!!
I’ve only read George, but I did really enjoy it, so I hope you will too. It’s a great topic to focus on for a middle grade audience. I have so many books on my shelves that I really need to read, so I’m trying to work on more backlist titles this year! I actually started a FB group recently for people who blog about books to help motivate, etc. if you want to join? I can send a link if you just write me on Twitter – @shootingstarmag

Sure thing! Would love to join 🙂 xx
I totally feel your pain!!! There just isn’t enough time for all the books. I haven’t read any of your ten, so I can’t say, “read this one first!” Maybe just delve right in and don’t make any trips to the library for awhile. ☺️
This looks like a really good list!! I understand the struggle. I am a English lit student and I never have time for anything besides school and work. When I do get times to read its pure bliss. Feel free to check out my blog:

Ah I feel your pain so much!! I’ve only read the Couple Next Door and did enjoy it. I also want to read the trouble with sheep and goats, just haven’t got around to t! Good luck getting through the list!
These look like a bunch of really great books! I am hoping to make more time to read this year; I always find myself scrolling through my phone and wasting time so I should start working on my TBR instead…

I’m the same but with library books, I take more and more out but I’m so behind with reading. I’m reading ‘The Girl in the Red Coat’ at the moment and it’s so good I can’t sleep at night because my mind is racing!!

The copile next door looks so good!! This is so relatable I have about 12 books waiting to be read it’s a good job they don’t go out of date haha

And then there’s people like me, that read posts like this and promptly add almost all of these books to my own TBR 🙁
I love this post Jenny! I haven’t read any of these books but I really want to get back into reading more! Let me know when you read some of these books and if any of them were any good!
Love, Cally x

Hi, I haven’t read any of your list unfortunately. I can however relate to buying books. I took one back to the library the other day, took out 3 and they had a sale on. Well a whole bag of books for £2 how can you refuse. Needless to say my tbr list never gets any smaller x
I won a copy of George last year too, and also still haven’t got to It! I need to this year too, not seen a single bad review for it I think 🙂
Amy xxx
I have collected and been given a few books in the past year or so and I’m just getting round to reading them! Making it my goal to read them all this year before purchasing new ones – although these posts don’t help when these books look so good to read!

This selection is amazing! I read The Dry & Bad Sister quite some time ago, but I remember lots of it. I recommend it so much. But you have to read ”Brooklyn Girl”

I know the feeling all too well! I’m an English lit student so haven’t had the chance to read anything other than what’s on my uni reading list. Looking forward to finishing so I can make my way through unread books on my shelf 🌈 x
I relate to this so much. I always ‘bulk buy’ books and read about three instantly then leave the rest there for ages before I pick one up. Bad Sister looks great x

Hi, you’ve got a great selection of books to get through there, maybe take a week of and see how many you can read 😊.
I’m exactly the same Jenny! 😂 I have so many books on my book shelf which I haven’t got round to reading yet. I like the sound of Travelling to Infinity by Jane Hawkin – I saw the film and really enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing, hope you enjoy reading them all when you do 😘 xx
Bexa | http://www.hellobexa.com
I’ve been wanting to read Traveling to Infinity for so long now! I loved the movie so would it be rational to hypothesise I’d enjoy the book too??
Absolutely not! The movie is amazing xxx
I read the couple next door last year. I liked it. You always think you know what’s going to happen but your guess is always wrong
Love a book like that!
All the books on your list sound really interesting and only adding to the pile I’ve already got on my tbr, I keep adding to it. I seem to read one and add 4. I hope I get to read all the books I want to read this year and I wish you luck on reading your ten here.
Hahaha definitely sounds like me!
I saw the Theory of Everything with my parents when it came out and we all really liked it. I wasn’t sure they would go for the movie because it’s not their thing genre wise. I may have to look up the book. I’ve heard of The Dry from somewhere and I kinda remember hearing good things about it. I feel like I’ve heard of most of these but not read them sadly. I picked up 5 or 6 books a couple weeks ago from an Art Mart (it’s a monthly thing where artists sell their various wares at a location here in town.) I still need to read those and I want to re read a couple books. The ones I want to re read are Ready Player One and A Wrinkle in Time. Both are being made into movies and I want to refresh my memory before seeing the movie.
I saw the trailer for Ready Player One, looked quite good!
Ha, how did you only pick 10! Defo push Goats and Sheep to the front of these!
I also have a review copy of The Foster Child which I haven’t read yet….and I did request it so don’t beat yourself up too much 🙂
Agh I just feel so bad but all the books get overwhelming!
Yep, and we just keep on getting more 😉
ooo i hope you get round to reading them! ive been trying to read more recently too
I hope so too xxx
There are so many on my list of books I want to read in 2018 and so many series I hope to finish.
Keyword: HOPE.
We’ll see how that goes. So far in Feb I’ve only finished one book. Sigh.
Same! February has been a dreadful reading month and January was so good!
I blame the shortness of the month lol!
I have a couple next door, the three and her next book day four, foster child on my tbr and bad sister on my wish list. I made a list the start of this year of books I wanna read but it’s quite a lot more than 10. it’s 17 and now I’m thinking I need a round number lol so may end up more on the list than 20.
2018 List:
Simon Kernick – Severed
Tim Weaver. – Chasing the dead
Amanda Brooke – The affair
Mandasue Heller – Afraid
Alex Lake – After Anna
Linda Green – After I’ve gone
Jamie Raven – The madam
Jennifer Weiner – All fall down
Jules Moulin – Ally Hughes has sex sometimes
Rachel Scurig – Three girls & a leading man
Katrine Diamond – The teacher
Linda Huber – Baby dear
Lisa Hall – Between you & me
Stuart macbride – Birthdays for the dead
KL Slater – Blink
Dreda say mitchell -Blood sister
Mason Cross – The Killing season
Ah I was so hoping I’d read at least one on your list but I haven’t! I’ve heard of some of them though – enjoy! xxx
The only one of these that I actually read was The Couple Next Door, and I really enjoyed it! I like her writing style a lot. It was a great read, I hope you enjoy all of these books when you get the chance to read them.
Thank you! I’ve heard so many good things about that book xxx
Eeeep, that’s quite a list! The only one I’ve read is The Trouble With Goats and Sheep, which I did enjoy but don’t want to give anything away here, hehe. Apart from all my forthcoming Book Group choices, the only other books I want to read are Sylvia Hunter’s YA trilogy and Robert Hutchinson’s Elizabeth’s Spymaster. Fingers crossed! And best of luck with your list! x
Lisa | http://www.lisasnotebook.com
Haha that’s fine! Glad you enjoyed it though! I’ve heard lots of good things xxx
I don’t have any of these but I have so many books on my shelves that I want to read this year x
http://www.ofbeautyandnothingness.co.uk
Hope you manage to read some of them xx
I read ‘The Couple Next Door’ last year, very good book. Can’t shed any light on any of the others I’m afraid. I’m a bit like you though and this year I’m determined to read more ‘literature’ that’s on my ‘Goodreads’ list, so I have ‘The Book Thief’, ‘All the light we cannot see’, ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’ and others waiting for me. I did a post ( not a plug honestly) on my top 5 reads from last year that you might want to look at. There were some surprises in there!
The Book Thief is my all time favourite book so I’d encourage you to read that next! I’ll check it out 🙂 xx
I’ve heard that from so many people. Thanks.
The Book Thief is good. All the Light We Cannot See is good, a bit long and bleak but still good. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is something I ought to read but I haven’t yet.
Thanks. I’m saving “All the light…” for a holiday so I can get into it uninterrupted. I don’t want to be reading 5 pages a night before bed !
Hehe makes sense. Thanks for following me. Just FYI I don’t really review books on here. I’d make a favorites list, but that would be so hard.
I recently read The Three and was left slightly disappointed. Sadly can’t say why as it gives the plot away!
Oh no! That’s the first negative I’ve heard about it eeek!
Haha glad to see it’s not just me that has far too many books to get through! A couple of these are on my list too so you have given me some motivation to get moving 😊 good luck! Xxx
Thank you- you too! xxx
I really enjoyed The Couple Next Door I hope you do too 😃 I fancy reading the Derren Brown one will be adding it to my list, have seen him live twice and he is amazing !
Melanie | http://www.frasersfunhouse.com
Oh wow really?! I’d love to see him live but I’d be scared he’d pick me to do something haha xxx
I was too I just ducked when he threw out frisbees 😂 Truly amazing live though if you ever get the chance to go I would highly recommend
What a great idea! And making your list public, I think, makes it more likely that you’ll get through all of them. I need to do the same thing. Fabulous post. I haven’t read any of them, by the way, but some of them sound like must-reads.
Yeah I’m hoping that’s the case as well!
The Couple Next Door is such a great book! So many twists and turns. I haven’t read any of the other books so will be looking out for your thoughts on them!
Another glowing review for The Couple Next Door! I’ll have to move that one up my list.
A lot of books I haven’t heard off Jenny. Like you I have too many books on my TBR pile. Just started reading The Keeper of Lost Things by Ruth Logan and really enjoying it. 🙂
Oooh yes I’ve seen that one floating about! Glad you’re enjoying it!
You’ve got some amazing books right there! I just got a new one, I now feel the need for more!
Love, Amie ❤
The Curvaceous Vegan
Have a little splurge!
I read the couple next door in about 7 hours. I literally couldn’t put it down! Even right at the end there’s a massive twist. I’m on the maze trials books at the moment and they are amazing oo
Omg YES that’s my kind of book! Can’t wait to read that one xxx
All of these books sound wonderful, but the Derren Brown book really jumped out at me. I think it’s something I would really enjoy too! Thank you for sharing 🌸✨
With love, Alisha Valerie x | http://www.alishavalerie.com
Thank you – I can’t wait to read Derren, I’ve watched everything he’s ever done! xxx
That’s quite a list there 😌 I too should read from my TBR.
Hopefully I can manage them all xxx
