I’ve been re-decorating my bedroom since more or less last September. I re-painted my walls; got rid of this awful, stained, grotty pink I had on my walls for what felt like forever (I sound like I live in a swamp Jesus Christ) and painted them a simple off-white (against my Mum’s judgement who insisted it “wouldn’t look right”. It did. Sorry Mum but you’re wrong on this one). I got rid of all my “tat”. I hate clutter as it is so I’m very happy throwing stuff away and I got a more simple style of bedding. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve been drawn more and more towards minimalism. In my life and in my home decor. Although I’m still not entirely happy with my bedroom and I’m still working on making it that perfect, simplistic place for me to have my safe haven, it’s certainly getting there and I have a much clearer mind of the type of style I want. And the type of style I’d want in the future when I hopefully have my own place.

We all have our own idea of what constitutes “minimal”. As someone who hates clutter, I firmly believe that less is more and we can create such gorgeous designs in our own home (in more or less every room) with this mindset that actually… we don’t need all the “stuff”, everywhere. I’ve done some research and I’m sharing some tips on how to create a minimalist look in your own home.

Pick a theme

Just because it’s a minimal look, doesn’t mean you can’t make it your own. A theme can be an important part of any room so choose one which suits you and go from there. This could be rustic, geometric, Scandinavian – go wild! You can choose decor to suit your theme, including gorgeous bedding from Julia Charles: https://www.juliancharles.co.uk/bedding/type/all-bedding.

De-clutter and figure out what’s important

In order to have a minimal home, you definitely need to think about de-cluttering and reducing the amount of “stuff” you own. We can get so caught up in our busy lives that a de-clutter doesn’t even cross our mind until it’s about 5 years over-due and by that point, you’ve built up so much rubbish, you don’t know where to start! I offered some advice on how to make your Spring clean more manageable and how I prepare for a bedroom clear out, to get you started.

Hidden storage

Obviously as much as we de-clutter, we’re always going to have some “stuff”. We’re human after all. So to keep with the consistency of your minimalist interior, hidden storage space is a life-saver! If you’re lucky enough to have plenty of built in kitchen units or bedroom wardrobes then great but shopping around for furniture which has storage space within in could be a game changer for that pesky “stuff”!

Don’t over-do the decor

Yes you want to make the decor your own personal style and tastes but in order to create a minimalist look, you certainly don’t want to over-do it. Gone are the days of 400 unused candles, 70 throw pillows and 12 different throws all in one room! Maybe pick 1 or 2 signature pieces to finish off any minimal room. A stunning wall print, a pretty plant or a simple sculpture will all do the trick.

Keep surfaces and floors clean and clear

As well as making sure your floors and surfaces are clean (as in, not dusty or dirty) keeping them physically clear of any clutter or decor is important in keeping with the minimalist theme in your home. I know we all have the tendency to pile boxes, books or shoes in the corner of the room or on the side just because it’s convenient but that’s a definite no-go with minimalist themes! If you have a stand with a TV on, that’s all that should be on there. Use those handy hidden storage spaces for DVD’s, remotes and books!

Are you a fan of minimalist looks? Do you have a specific theme in any room in your house? Let me know!

  3. I want a more minimalist look! I really do, I just have so much clutter but I have been working on clearing it out and I have packed off so much to charity! I need more hidden storage like you suggested! x x x

  4. I swear I am in a constant state of decluttering my home. Just when I think I am finished, I end up starting all over again. My bedroom will forever look messy as it is so tiny!

These are some great tips though.

  5. I’m one of those people who borders on being a hoarder. I have so much useless stuff all over my house, it’s a nightmare! I really like the minimalist look though and want to be better at it. For the first year ever I’m doing a proper spring clean which is helping – and I’m making the most of hidden storage too! Those bedsheets in the photo are stunning!

  6. I would love to be minimalist but with a husband, child, and three cats my dreams of Scandi chic style are always going to remain just dreams, sadly. Decluttering is on the list though, I think we always have too much clutter 🙂 x

  8. This post couldn’t have come at a better time! I’m currently planning my room makeover with a more minimalistic theme, and I felt kind of lost before reading this post. Thanks for the advice!

  9. I have been postponing my room decor because I wanted a simplistic, no-bs decor and thought it wasn’t a thing. Going through your post makes me want to restart the minimalist room decor I originally had in mind.

  10. You certainly have a start; now for a little color, not much–my wife spent eight months, of course we are retired, with sometimes 12 hours devoted to our home–a simple color, not gaudy but tasteful, giving life to what was acceptable as we left grad school, raised our daughter, now in grad school herself working toward her PhD in Japanese Lit/Comp Lit, but daughter was able to land a nice apartment (flat) for about $825.00 US, so she’s returned to our home to retrieve her belongings. My wife and daughter are so much alike, both minimalists in style, allowing a little tasteful color, and simple colored curtains covering modern windows. So, maybe cut yourself some slack, and a little more decorating.

  11. I like a minimalistic look but when I’m at my parents my whole life is kinda crammed into a single room, but when I’m in my own flat it actually is minimalist as all the ‘stuff’ is spread out. Great post Jenny x

  12. This was very useful to read! We’re moving to our new in a few weeks and I’m always thinking about the decor, I don’t want to overdo it, I’d like to keep things at minimal as even the smallest room can look and feel spacious when there’s not much clutter around.
