You might look at me and think I don’t look like the sort of person who is interested in steam trains. And you’d be 100% correct – I’m not. But last year, I enjoyed my weekend on the Severn Valley Railway during their Autumn Steam Gala in September so much that I knew I wanted to go again this year, for their Spring weekend. Spring it was not as we were inundated with snow and icy temperatures for two of the days but it was a lovely weekend nevertheless. Although the engines are pretty impressive and yes, you feel like you’re on the Hogwarts express, I just think it’s a really nice, relaxing weekend and a chance to get away from the norm.
So the Spring Steam Gala on the Severn Valley Railway was on from 16th – 18th March and it featured a lot of big and famous steam engines (which I’d go into more detail about if I knew anymore about them). My boyfriend and I got up super early on Friday morning to drive the 3 hours to Bridgnorth in Shropshire, where we were staying and where we’d start our days over the weekend.
My parents joined us for the day at lunchtime and brought my doggie with them which was lovely – my dog hasn’t really had a holiday before (I know that sounds stupid) so it was so funny to see him on these trains and trotting along the platform. He thoroughly enjoyed it, from what I could see! So me, my boyfriend, my parents and my dog spent Friday going up and down the line and we headed back to their hotel for dinner in the evening, which was nice.
They headed home on Saturday morning but we stayed there all weekend, so we headed to our own hotel on Friday night. The George, which is literally on the other side of the road to the station (perfect location) and I was so impressed with everything about the hotel. The room was big and spacious, the shower was bliss after a long day and the beds were comfy. The staff were so lovely and there was free breakfast included in the price of the room.
Saturday was a long old day but it was also the first day we got a bit of snow. Although nothing settled this day, it was still bitterly cold so we wrapped up as warm as we could. We did a fair few trips down the line on this day – well until it got dark. Then we booked a table in our hotel for dinner that night which was absolutely brilliant. We shared a huge platter for starters, I opted for a smoked salmon and prawn cocktail with salad whilst Carl got fish and chips and it was honestly enough for 3! Again, another thing about the hotel we couldn’t fault. The food was cheap but you got so much of it for your money.
Sunday was quite a spectacular day because it had been snowing all night long and we woke up to a good 4 inches of snow. Luckily we weren’t leaving until mid-afternoon so didn’t need to drive anywhere whilst the snow was really bad so we just hopped on the train and enjoyed the beautiful, snowy, countryside views. Which were absolutely stunning.
I really enjoy these holidays because they genuinely give me time to do well… nothing. Which if you’ve read a few of my previous posts, you’ll know that’s something I struggle with a lot. Watching the scenery, reading my book and even chatting to random people sitting in your compartment, it’s a lovely weekend to get away from your normal life for a bit. Bridgnorth is a gorgeous area, one I’d love to explore more of and these trains are a far cry from the frantic and stress of London. It’s a different world and I can’t wait to go back!

It looks like you had a fantastic time! It looks so beautiful. I love the Harry Potter train! 😀
I did, thank you! 🙂
It looks like you had a fantastic time too, and you had some gorgeous views! Steam trains always seem to remind me of Harry potter weirdly, I would love to do something like this one day, it looks a lot of fun!

It’s very much like being on the Hogwarts Express!
Aw, this looks so much fun, I think Flora would love this as well. And how wonderful that you could take your dog along, he looks so cute and chilled! Also, this would be a great way to introduce Flora to Harry Potter too, haha!
Lisa
Absolutely. It’s a lovely weekend – so chill!
That looks like such an amazing trip – especially because your dog could come! I’d love to do more staycations but always find myself wanting to go abroad.
It was nice taking my doggie somewhere new 🙂
This sounds like such a lovely way to spend a weekend – and so different too! I’d have never thought of going to spend a weekend on steam trains before but it actually sounds pretty relaxing! xo

It really is! One of my most relaxing holidays cos you literally don’t have to do anything!
Sounds like you had a great time! Lovely pictures too
I did thank you x
This looks so fun xx
This looks like the perfect weekend! I’m not a massive fan of steam trains, they are pretty cool but the partner has a massive love for them. I definitely need to plan a weekend away with her at Severn Valley Railway. She’s actually been asking about this a couple of times, she will love it. Seems like you had a lovely weekend! Even if you didn’t fully understand the trains.

Tell you what… they have another one of these galas in September and you two should TOTALLY come and meet us there! xx
You know what, I was actually thinking that… Haha, but I’m not sure if she would want that. She’s not a people person. I’m sure if I say we will be going Severn Valley she’ll like it.
It looks like you had a great time – I’ve never been on a steam train x

I did, thank you!
Oh your doggie is so sweet and looks like he thoroughly enjoyed his holiday too. This is such a wonderful idea for a holiday I’m so glad you had an amazing time. Your pictures make it look stunning!
He did! He was so funny on the train!
This looks actually dreamy. I love the idea of just chilling out and watching the scenery, it sounds so peaceful and relaxing. Your dog is also the cutest thing ever, I just want to squish his little face. I’m so glad you had such a nice time away, you deserve it!
Beth x
Hahaha Awh! I’m sure he’d appreciate a face squish! It really is so lovely and relaxing. Nice to get off the grid as well and not worry about blogging or social media!
One day we will meet for a cuppa, next time, as I live less than 5 mins from The George and SVR!
I’ve been on one of the SVR’s murder mystery evenings which are fantastic but quite expensive 🙂
Ah really! They sound like fun. I’d love to go for Halloween. I should be back there in September 🙂
Sounds like you had a fabulous time, and OMG cute little doggy, and that garlic bread looked delicious btw!!!
Charlene | http://www.charlenemcelhinney.co.uk
I can confirm the garlic bread was awesome 🙂
Aww this looks so nice! Also the dog is SO CUTE
Hehe thank you, he thinks so too 😉
What a picturesque short break! Also, the scrumptious meal looks like a cherry on top of the cake!
It really was! The meal was so cheap as well so all in all a pretty perfect day that one was!
Looks like you had an amazing time lovely! The views were amazing!
Love, Amie ❤
