We live in a world that’s increasingly stressful. Whichever side of the political divide you fall, whatever social media network you use, the web is thick with arguments and work exerts its own pressures into the bargain. Modern technology promises to lift our burdens and make work easier, but instead by making us so constantly available it’s difficult to carve out time when you’re unavailable and off duty.

To maintain equilibrium, you need to find some boltholes: places where you hide away from the world, and restore yourself physically as well as mentally, ready to face the world with renewed enthusiasm when you emerge.

Beauticians, Spas and Aestheticians

There’s no better way to retreat from the world when you need some peace and privacy than a beauty treatment. You’re cut off from the world by design, you have someone devoting their time and attention to taking care of you and you can emerge feeling pampered and refreshed as well as looking better!

You don’t have to confine such treatments to evenings and weekends – if you know you’ve got a stressful time at work like an interview or a meeting, scheduling a lunchtime treatment at a central location like the Skinsmiths Skin Clinic Liverpool Street lets you fit in some pampering before you get back to the office.

Food and Drinks

Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name, and while Cheers may not be conveniently local for you, a local bar, pub or café is a soothing place to retreat to.

Pick somewhere that makes you feel comfortable – it doesn’t have to be the expensive or luxurious place in town, just somewhere you feel at home. Whether it’s a conveniently placed chain café or one of London’s best independent coffee shops. Building a routine around it, like a walk or jog followed by settling into your familiar chair for a coffee or a snack is a way to take some time for yourself in a busy world, with the repetition and familiarity helping you to relax further on each subsequent occasion.

Feeling at Home

The ultimate bolthole is of course your own home. You need to make sure you’re able to relax and feel at home there. If you can’t switch off when you need to there, you need to make some serious changes!

Make sure there’s at least one corner of your home, whether it’s a sprawling house, a modest flat or even a single room that you can retreat to for some peace and quiet. Whether it’s a soak in a bath, your office or simply an armchair in the corner, establish somewhere that’s private and for you. Turn off your phone, read a book or watch a film and enjoy some time without the buzzes of constant notifications and…relax.

Do you have any particular destinations you go to which feel like self-care to you? How do you practice self-care when you’re out and about? Let me know in the comments!

  1. I think this is truly important and women don’t take enough time for themselves. We always feel guilty. I have made it my mission to everyday to unplug and be away from my phone from 7pm – 6am the next morning. I physically can’t handle the pressure the cellphone brings anymore.

  2. I agree with the coffee shops. I always say I’m going to make a habit of finding one and just going to relax once a day with a cup of coffee and a good book. . .but I never actually go through with it. It’s def a goal of mine this year though.

  3. Super cool! London is definitely on my wishlist and I practice self Care by listening to motivational speakers through
My aux in the car or listening to meditative music
