AD | It’s never too early to start thinking about special occasions, in my opinion (I saw someone mention a Christmas in July related event on Twitter the other day, true story) and I love planning ahead and being organised as much as possible so when these things do roll around, you’re not left scrambling to think of something to do or buy! Although I don’t personally celebrate Valentine’s Day which has just been and gone, Mother’s Day is an occasion that I definitely try and go all-out for.
I have a Mother’s Day gift guide going live on my blog at the beginning of March which I’m super excited about sharing with you but if gifts aren’t your thing and you’d rather a fun day or night out with your Mum or Mother figure instead, then you’ve come to the right place! My Mum and I will always try and do a little something on Mother’s Day (or around Mother’s Day, if it doesn’t fall on the right day) to commemorate the day but for those of you who are bored of your bog standard afternoon tea (although don’t get me wrong, I love an afternoon tea!) then here are some alternative suggestions for you and your Mother figure this year!
A night in the big city
If you can afford to really treat your Mum / Mother figure this year or perhaps you split the cost of a night out so you can spend that quality time together, why not make a real night of it and head into your nearest big city, get dressed up, go and see a theater show (I’d recommend Wicked!) and perhaps even hire a chauffeur if you’re really going for it and want to feel like royalty for the night.
A day out at the zoo / a theme park / aquarium
Instead of doing something sophisticated, why not flip the script and do something totally fun, carefree and dare I say it… childish? I love a trip to the zoo whenever I can (only zoo’s that I think are worthy of visiting and thankfully there are plenty of amazing zoos near me) and I think it’s a super fun day out. Or if you’re both thrill seekers, then a trip to a theme park might be a perfect option for you!
A spa day or weekend
What better time to treat your Mum / Mother figure than on Mother’s Day? And I’m going to bet that you both need a bloody good pamper (because let’s face it, Women are on the go 24/7 and we don’t take enough time for ourselves AM I RIGHT LADIES). A relaxing spa day (or weekend if you have the time / money) could be just what you need!
A day of culture and learning
Okay I’m aware of how nerdy that sounds (nothing wrong with being a nerd though, is there?) but perhaps if razzle dazzle in the evening isn’t your thing, roller-coasters make you puke and the thought of someone massaging you gives you the heebie-jeebies, then a cultured day in your local city, filling up on culture, museums, art and sight-seeing might be a great option for a Mother’s Day day out!
Are you planning to do anything special for Mother’s Day? Which of the above would be your top pick for something to do with your Mum / Mother figure?

These are some great ideas Jenny. When my sister and I were younger we used to go with our mum to Bourton on the Water every year and have a meal there. We also visited Brum at the Motoring Museum and the penguins at Birdland. Now we’re adults we still take her on day trips and for a meal, last year it was Bourton on the Water funnily enough! But we’ve also been to safari parks, Bath city etc.
Sounds lovely! A motoring Museum sounds great!
It was! They have so many classic cars on display there including a couple of old race cars when I last went.
I love going for family days out on Mother’s Day – best way to spend it x
Really is. Nothing is more valuable than time 😌
Never been on a spa day, so that’d be the one I would choose! 😀

Hope you have a nice day together this year too 😌
So many great ideas here. I haven’t really thought about it yet! My mum turns 50 a few weeks after so I think I’ll have to do something big for both this year! x

As a mature woman I agree that a shared experience and quality time together is far more valued than any material gift.
Gifts can be great if they’re personal and sentimental but I love a day out / experience 😌
Some lovely ideas here! I wish I could get my Mum to a spa but she insists it isn’t her thing… I reckon she’d change her mind if she experienced one though!
This Mother’s Day, my two sisters and I are taking my Mum out for food. There’s a place in our home city which does something called Gospel Brunch. A full on gospel choir singing brilliantly whilst you have lovely food – it’s a dream!
I agree that having an experience together is better than gifts really 😊

Sorry to hear that but I hope you can find something nice to do together!
I think the older we get, an experience like the ones you mention mean so much more.
They definitely do. No one needs a load of tat really!
I love the idea of hiring a chauffeur! My mum is such a homebody though, I wish she liked spas because I love them and would’ve love to go to one!
Hopefully you can find somewhere which benefits you both 😌 Treat yourself to a spa day!
Those are lovely ideas! I prefer sharing an experience over giving a gift she will probably not use. 😉
I totally get why! It’s a nice day you can both experience together too 😌
So many great ideas! I think going out and having the day together is always more special, creating memories everyone can remember. A night in the city with a trip to the theatre sounds perfect, Wicked is amazing isn’t it! xx

I agree, I’d much rather have a day out with someone. Although I do like buying presents too 🙊 Wicked is amazing! Would love to see it again.
Such great ideas, it’s got me thinking for my mum x
Hope you think of something nice to do together! 😌
I’m sure we will xx
I think a day of culture would be wonderful!
It really would! I love the Science Museum and Natural History Museum in London 😌
We have a new museum here in Edmonton so I think I’m going to suggest that. Thanks Jenny!
I always make the best breakfast on mother’s day and Mother’s day is also the day that we celebrate my mothers birthday this year.
