Affiliate links | We’re told time and time again that we need to get away from our screens, get off of social media and spend more time in the “real” world. Heck, just this month I spoke about why you should have a digital detox! But if the COVID situation has taught us anything, it’s the importance that technology and screens have in our lives. Despite the fact my screen time app on my iPhone shouts at me every week for the amount of time I’ve spent staring at my phone, today I want to talk about screen time activities for personal growth.
Photo by Tanya Trukyr on Unsplash
But let’s be sensible here, I think we all know our limits when it comes to screen usage. I can definitely feel it in my eyes when I’ve been on a screen for too long and not necessarily realised it. When I get carried away with work or binge watching my favourite show then all of a sudden it hits me that I have a banging headache, my eyes are dry AF and I haven’t moves my limbs in 8 hours.
But technology and online resources have given us so much. So, so much. You only need to look at 2020 so far to see the importance technology has on our lives. I’m sure it saved a lot of people from crippling loneliness in the midst of lockdown. So whilst yes, we need to know our limits and not go over-board with the screen usage, it’s also a great tool to use for activities for personal growth.
And I think now is a great time to focus on our personal growth and self development. We’ve all been through a lot this year – a lot that’s probably going to change us going forward, whether we want it to or not. So it’s definitely a good time to work on those things we want to change, expand on those things we already have and commit to learning more about ourselves than ever before.
If you’re ready to work on yourself and want to use technology, apps and the internet to do that, here are 6 screen time activities for personal growth for you to look into!

Do an online course
The courses themselves certainly don’t have to be about personal growth but just the very act of expanding your knowledge and being willing and open to learn something new is a great activity for personal growth. And the great thing is, is there’s so many possibilities out there and options for courses, depending on what you’re after.
If you’re looking to expand on your blogging knowledge, a course like Pinterest With Ell might be for you. After something to tend to your spiritual side? I’d highly recommend Abundane Acdaemy! If you’re after something a bit more academic, Coursera has a huge range of free courses.
Guided meditation & Yoga
If you’re absolutely sick to death of me harping on about Yoga and meditation, then feel free to skip this point (I won’t be offended… much) but if you can, hear me out. You can learn a lot about yourself when you strip it back to basics. When it’s just you and your breath. But if you’re not familiar with meditation or just don’t know where to start, a guided meditation is a great option. I personally love this meditation for self love.
And speaking of Yoga, Yoga is a great tool for personal growth. And the reason I put this on the list is because of the range of free Yoga videos you can find on YouTube. Which are incredible for the health of your mind, body and spirit. Here are 10 Yoga With Adriene practices I’d recommend and Yoga With Adriene practices for every mood.
Run your own workshop
This one fills me with dread thinking about it. That’s how I know it would be incredible for my personal growth. Online workshops, online courses, online anything have proved their worth and value, especially this year. So if you’re an expert in something or have the experience in something that could add value to others, you could consider running your own workshop.
This is a great activity for personal growth because it will allow you to step outside of your comfort zone (more on that in a minute), help you expand on your skills and connect with others – perhaps people you don’t even know – on a much deeper level.
Develop a new and exciting project
This is a great way to really go ALL OUT with your personal growth. Throw yourself completely into something new and exciting. That’s completely yours. Something that you’ll have to work hard to build from scratch. Something that might fail… but that’s the point, isn’t it?
You’re never going to grow if you know everything you do will always turn out perfectly. Excuse me for acting like I’m giving a Ted Talk here but it’s true. The most exciting and scary thing for me lately was planning my own retreat. Yes, I know, not online (apart from the planning stage) but the point is, is I’ve never done anything like that before. I had NO IDEA how it was going to go (and ultimately didn’t end up going at all, thanks to COVID).
Step outside of your comfort zone
This was a big one for me last year in terms of my “real” life and I wrote about how I was stepping out of my comfort zone. But this is certainly something you can do online too. Take the last two points as an example. I’m sure for many of us, running an online workshop would feel a bit “fish out of water”. It certainly would for me!
But there are plenty of other ways you can step outside of your comfort zone online or using technology. Going live on Instagram for example, might be a walk in the park for some. For others, an anxiety-inducing nightmare! Or perhaps posting a different style of Instagram photo or writing about something new on your blog.
Listen to personal growth podcasts
Is this one cheating because you don’t TECHNICALLY have to look at a screen in order to listen to a podcast? I suppose you have to navigate a screen to get TO the podcast. So I’ll consider this one a valid point. Podcasts can be a great tool for personal growth. Another positive, is that they don’t have to take up a ton of time! You can listen to them whilst cooking, commuting, gardening or another every day task!
And since we’re cheating on the rules for screen time activities for personal growth, why not consider trying self-hypnosis? You can find some of the best hypnosis downloads here, which can help create positive change in your life.
Hypnosis is a powerful technique that works by changing the way you think. By allowing yourself to be hypnotized, you can reprogram your subconscious mind and create a more positive outlook on life.
This is a great activity to do each morning before starting your day or even to get you into the right mindset before bed. This tool can help reduce stress levels and boost your personal growth to new heights.
[…] then it can be an invaluable tool and resource for many things – including self care and self growth! So the next time you hear someone tell you that in order to have a meaningful self care practice […]
Great advice! I am always using technology to benefit me and I think others should do the same 🙂
Since being on furlough, work have paid for me to have access to loads of webinars and workshops to help me keep on top of my skills for when I go back which has been super helpful. I’d also love to host webinars as well, but I need to work on my blog first – one thing at time!
That’s amazing!
Great post. Online seminars, meditation and gazing sessions have made this time an opportunity rather than a tragedy. I feel badly for the people who are suffering and struggling. Thanks for introducing me to Unsplash.com.
Thank you. I agree.
I try to do things off screen because I spend most of my life looking at one but with the world the way it is right now and so much being online I do love doing online courses and listening to things like podcasts x
Sophie
Yeah I agree. There’s so much benefits online!
My screen time since lockdown has been…so high! X
I’ve experienced a lot of personal growth by using technology. Blogging for instance, and social platforms like Goodreads and I’ve learned a ton too! I think there are definite pros to technology, and as long as we aware of the cons, I think it’s a great way to learn and grow.
Definitely a lot of pros to technology!
Love this post – my screentime over lockdown has become tooooo much!! I now restrict my hours on my phone during work days to give my brain a bit of a break!

These are such great ideas! Online courses are definitely a must and have helped me stay focused and productive! Guided meditation is the one thing I do daily that helps me stay calm and less anxious !
I need to do more guided meditations! Do you have any recommendations?
Fantastic ideas, Jenny. I love learning! I’m currently doing Spanish on Duolingo. I do wish I’d made more use of the lockdown and done some blogging courses. I used to always listen to a podcast on my morning commute which sadly is a habit I have never been able to get back into since I no longer have a commute x
Helen | http://www.whathelenloves.com
Ah that’s a shame. Hopefully you can find another time to listen to podcasts. I’ve tried Duolingo a number of times. I love the app but I don’t have the patience, sadly!
I really want to do an online course in something but haven’t decided what! xx
Try Coursera, they have loads to choose from!
I personally really like using technology for personal growth. I have a ton of apps to help clear my mind, and lots that teach me more about the spiritual things I believe in. I also have bought a fair few courses – once I’ve got my mental health back to a healthy place and can concentrate properly again I’m going to be really diving deep into them! I love the idea of starting a project or course – I always feel I have nothing to offer people but I’m starting to think that letting myself believe that is really just holding myself back!
Sounds like you’re really in the right direction with this personal growth stuff! You definitely need to believe in yourself more!
Love this!
Thank you 🙂
Only courses having been a saviour during lockdown! I’ve also really been loving my early morning works, Yoga with Adriene, Cat Meffan, and Heather Robinson are my favourites! Great post x
Evie x | http://www.eviejayne.co.uk
Sounds perfect! Online courses are amazing x
These are some great tips. I’ve been doing some online courses and yoga too. Its great that there are so many resources available these days.
It really is. The resources are limitless!
I actually really enjoy listening to podcasts why I work so any on personal growth sound like an incredible idea if I’m honest! Thanks for sharing these tips Jenny x
I can’t listen to anything whilst I’m writing but if I’m creating pins or replying to comments, I definitely need to start listening to podcasts!
Oh I LOVE this post Jenny! I’ve actually started to do my Digital Marketing Diploma and I’m taking a day off a week to do it – i.e. nothing BUT screen time. There’s something so satisfying about making progress and I find it so helpful doing it in a ‘guided’ way – same with yoga and meditation apps! I’m also working on a new project, too which I’m getting excited to launch :). I know what you mean about running a workshop, but I honestly think you’d be amazing at it!
Kate x
http://www.findingkate.co
Awh thanks Kate! Excited to hear about your new project too!!!
I’m sticking with the yoga – it’s helped so much during lockdown and I’ve really enjoyed it xx
I’m glad to hear that!
I’ve always loved the idea of doing an online course and I really regret not doing it whilst I was working from home and I had a lot of time. Thanks for these tips – very useful!
Thank you 🙂
These are all such great ideas! I have definitely been doing a lot of online courses here lately too!
That’s great to hear!
Love these ideas, I’ve actually been doing a few of these already. Investing in myself by listening to podcasts and signing up to online courses to meditating. I’ve been trying to step out of my comfort zone more, doing an IG live is next on my list to conquer. Thanks for sharing dear!
Tx. // Tajinder Kaur
Oh wow! Good luck with an IG live!
Throughout lockdown I’ve done online courses which relate to the job I do, I’ve really enjoyed them. Due to working staggers hours it’s hard to commit to checking blog stuff because of work, but I’m trying to keep up with it 😁
You’re doing great!
This a good list! I’d love to host my own online workshop, just figuring out how to make it stand out so people want to come!
You’d be amazing!
Great suggestions! I really want to try a meditation app 🙂
They’re a great place to start if you’re new to meditation!
Some great ideas! I hadn’t thought about hosting my own workshop!
http://www.achaosstory.com/
It’d be an amazing thing to do!
Such great tips, thank you for sharing! I’ve always wondered how I could make better use of my time, digitally and I will definitely be trying some of these out! 🌻💖
Hope you enjoy them!
I shall! And thank you again 💗💗
What a beneficial article to read, especially right now. I’ve been feeling in a bit of a slump when it comes to my life and my work. It’s nice to be reminded that there are activities that can help boost my mood and even spark inspiration! I just began a new e-course and it’s been fantastic. I need to get back to listening to podcasts.
Awh thank you. I hope these help!
I tried out an online course a while back, and was surprised by how much I enjoyed it, as well as how much I learned. I love being able to take something good away from spending time online. 🙂
You really do learn so much from them!
So fun! Yeah, I use my phone for yoga (I use an app) and I subscribed to my new favorite artist that has an app that sends you daily motivations. It’s great!
Podcasts too! Although, I haven’t listened to any recently. haha
Oooh daily motivations sound like my cup of tea!
So many good ideas here! Learning something new is so important. You never really know where it will lead…but you have to take that first step and try. It does pay to stretch our comfort zone a bit…great post!
I agree!
These are really great tips. I am not brave enough to host a workshop, but I do love taking courses and learning about things! I also really enjoy podcasts as I work our or do some of my side jobs – they get me motivated and keep me productive. Thanks for sharing!
Love, Em x
Maybe one day you can host a workshop!
Thanks for sharing, I find it hard to step away from the computer/Ipad sometimes, so having something of line like a book or a crossword helps, as it keeps my brain going, podcasts are good to, I find Of the Menu one great to listen to 🙂
I haven’t heard of that one.
These are some great options. I have discovered that there are a number of websites offering free courses right now in light of the COVID-19 lockdown. It seemed like the perfect opportunity, so I signed up for a couple and have been working through them a little each day. I’ve always loved learning, so why not embrace the opportunity?
Ah that’s great! Hope you enjoy them!
My challenges are to stay on track with all the possibilities of what I might do, rather than just finding myself trying to take on too much. But I love your list of possibilities – there’s really no excuse in the age of information!
Totally no point taking more on just for the sake of it!
I’ve seen the Abundance Academy on your blog a couple times now and it’s making me feel super-intrigued, might have to check it out! Great post as ever 😁
Oh it’s fantastic! The programme has actually just been re-vamped too 🙂
I love on line courses. Done a ton of them over the lock down. Learned alot about how social marketing works, how to use instagram to grow my blog…
Sounds like some really valuable courses!
Thanks for the advice Jenny, will definitely be taking this on board! I am always trying to find stuff to add to my CV and LinkedIn for when I graduate so I have more to show than just a degree 🙂
Lauren // https://www.wooloftheking.com/
That’s a great reason to invest in things like this!
I love the idea of doing an online course, I haven’t done many before but I know people find them really interesting. I really want to try one and find some new podcasts to read! X
Coursera is great for courses because they’re free!
I have to be honest, I spend so much time staring at a laptop or phone that I do prefer doing any personal development stuff away from a screen! Which is also why I always prefer a physical copy of a book rather than a Kindle, for example. But I do realise the value of online courses (I’ve got Ell’s Pinterest course), it’s just finding the time to do them. Love your point about going outside the comfort zone though, that’s really how you know you’re learning! X
Lisa | http://www.lisasnotebook.com
Love Ell’s course. It’s so good!
I enjoyed reading this blog! I do agree that social media and technology has it’s benefits which you explained really well!! I have actualy written a blog about the pros and cons of social media which you should check out!
https://niraj.home.blog/2020/07/17/discussing-the-pros-and-cons-of-social-media/
Thank you 🙂
What a great post Jenny! These ideas are an amazing way to keep away from social media and just do something that little bit different! x
Lucy | http://www.lucymary.co.uk
Thank you 🙂 x
Some amazing ideas Jenni! I love the idea of running a workshop or doing an online course. Maybe this has given me the motivation to go through with my ideas.
Emma

Yesss do it!
There are definitely positive benefits to technology and you have highlighted some great things you can do. I love to learn so taking a course would be great to do. I am going to be trying yoga and meditation this week which I am excited about. Thank you for sharing these suggestions Jenny.
Lauren | http://www.bournemouthgirl.com
Oooh exciting! Hope you love it 🙂
Jenny,
You have mentioned many excellent activities in your post. We are living in the technology age and should embrace it. Having lived without the internet I can tell you I am so much more productive now. I have taken advantage of many of your suggestions and they have made me a better person. Thank you for sharing. Stay safe.
Thank you 🙂
Great post. Thanks for all the info. Mediation apps are great – especially for beginners trying to build their own routine. I would add there are a number of great apps designed to improve overall cognition. One app I use is called Elevate which I absolutely love. It’s game based so a lot of fun and designed to improve skills like focus, memory, math, speaking ability, reading comprehension, etc. I play for 10-15mins everyday and have found it massively beneficial, esp as a writer. Love your blog!
Great suggestions!
I’d like to do some courses, though anything that requires a lot of work, I’ll leave off until the kids are back at school now I think. I also want to get some money in my
PayPal so I can look to buy some blogging courses, I’ve done some free ones, it’s time for the next step. I don’t have the money for it in our budget though, I have to earn it.
That’s a smart idea! And you’ll definitely get there. Some blogging courses are so worth it (hope mine will be when it’s launched!) and are so helpful!
Love your suggestions! I really need to get back into meditation as it can have such a positive effect and it always changes my day! Generally I think I need to get better at having time away from my phone so I’ll definitely be taking these on board xx
Tiffany x http://www.foodandotherloves.co.uk
Meditation apps are a great place to start!
Great post! Thank you for sharing! This is such an amazing idea and I love the suggestions you have mentioned!
Thank you 🙂
I think it’s so easy to become absorbed into a social-media black hole but using screen time for something beneficial for personal growth is definitely something I’ve been trying to do during lockdown. I’ve been trying to learn a bit of German and brushing up on my Spanish to try and make my screen-time more productive.
Tash // A Girl with a View
Oooh I’d absolutely love to learn German! Such a beautiful language!
Thank you for such an informative article! I am a huge believer in lifelong learning! Groupon also has good savings on some courses..
Oooh good shout! I’ll have to check them out!
This is such an interesting post – a completely different way to look at things! And for me really blogging and being part of an online community is all part of self-growth and learning and its great to see that as a positive thing despite meaning I am on my laptop for a lot of the time!
Yeah I agree that’s a huge part of self growth because you can learn sooo much from other bloggers!
Great post!! I’m definitely at a point where I’m feeling the need to push myself, my only trouble is deciding where I want to focus my energies. I tried looking at an online course but had problems with the one that I chose (bad company, course wasn’t what I thought) and it really put me off, but this is a good inspiration to try again. It would definitely be great if we came out of all of this being able to reflect how it affected us in a positive way as well as the negative.
Lindsey | https://aramblingreviewer.wordpress.com
Coursera is a good place to start because they’re free. And if it’s not for you, you’re not losing anything. I agree though, there’s so many possibilities it can be hard to know where to start.
I’m really invested in personal growth so these ideas are perfect for me! I love taking online courses and will definitely be looking into the abundance academy!
Em x
https://planningwithem.com
Abundance Academy is sooo good, I could literally rave about it all the time!
Love these tips! I don’t really feel the backlash of social media, so I love to use the internet to be a better self!
That’s great to hear. It’s really about how you use social media.
This was such an interesting read. I want to try a meditation app and you’ve just persuaded me to go ahead and do it. Love your blog!
Yess do it! They’re a great place to start if you’re new to meditation!
Love this! Pros and cons with technology, like with everything, but I completely agree, technology has given us so much and can really be leveraged for our own growth! Thank you for sharing, I definitely needed the motivation, I would love to step out my comfort zone and plan some workshops! Congrats on planning your own retreat, that’s so amazing! 😀 ps I love the Yoga with Adriene self love meditation too!!x
Thank you! Such a shame it had to be postponed though! Adriene’s meditations are sooo good!
I love the idea of starting your own project and listening to podcasts! Sounds like a fun combo together too. Great post 🙂

Oh yeah totally!
