I’ve mentioned it before on my blog but I love a staycation. To me, a staycation is a holiday taken in your home country. For me, that’s the UK. A staycation is NOT a holiday in your own damn house. Just wanted to clear that up to avoid the confusion. But yeah, I bloody love a staycation and exploring the UK is something I’ve really missed.

I’ve not been abroad for a number of years, instead opting to explore different areas of the UK and what it has to offer. This was partially due to my anxiety and the fact that getting on a plane would have probably killed me at one point. But even so, now I’m in a position to get on a plane again (not that I can right now), I still wouldn’t neglect a good ol’ staycation.
I’ve shared a few staycation adventures on my blog before, including my press visit to The Ferry House Inn, a Lord of the Rings adventure at West Stow Pods and the Severn Valley Railway Steam Gala among others. But today I want to share some staycation destinations that I hope I can visit once it’s safe to do so. It’s my birthday coming up, so a travel gift voucher would be amazing!
Here are 5 staycation destinations on my wish-list:
Bath
I’ve wanted to visit Bath for a long time because I hear nothing but good things about it and from photos and videos I’ve seen, it looks beautiful. I’d love to visit the Roman Baths, take in the beautiful architecture of Bath Abbey and explore the picturesque city.
It would be super easy for me to get to bath by coach as well, which is what I’d probably opt for. My blogging friend Lisa from Lisa’s Notebook and I are hoping to meet up and go to Bath one day! If we ever can…
Scotland road trip
Can you believe I’ve NEVER been to Scotland? Nope. Never. Not even to Edinburgh or a city. The closest I’ve come to Scotland is Cumbria and The Lake District. In fact, where I stayed at The Lake District, I could SEE Scotland. I’ve just never stepped foot on it’s turf myself. But I would love to visit the Scottish Highlands!
My boyfriend and I have spoken about doing a road trip when one of us has a reliable car to take us on such a trip. There are plenty of great car brands, such as Vauxhall, which provide Vauxhall leasing of cars which would be perfect to take us around the North Coast 500.
Lincoln
My boyfriend’s parents live in Lincolnshire and despite the fact we’ve been together for 6 years (?) I’ve only ever been to Lincoln city once. And that was in the evening for a meal, so we didn’t even get to explore the actual city. Although I did have a walk around the Cathedral which is stunning.
So I think of all of these, this will be the first thing on my to-do list when it’s safe to do so. Not only can we visit my boyfriend’s parents after such a long time but also spend a whole day exploring Lincoln.
St Ives
If it’s not possible to go abroad for a while, then I definitely want to visit somewhere like St Ives. I’ve been to Cornwall once before on a surfing and adventure sports holiday (which was SO MUCH FUN and no, I can’t surf to save my life) but St Ives would be my perfect choice for a relaxing holiday.
After the stress of 2020 and 2021 (so far), it’s so very needed! I’d love to hire out a motorhome and explore to the furthest reaches of Cornwall!
Southampton
And finally, Southampton. And the main reason I want to take a trip to Southampton is to attend the Southampton Boat Show. Of course this is a bit hit and miss right now as I’m not sure the next boat show will even be able to run due to COVID but hopefully in the future it’s something I can do.
There’s a few bloggers I know who are from Southampton and their photos always look so beautiful. A week exploring Southampton, the boats and all the local attractions sounds right up my street!

We’d love to feature this post in our next issue… would that be ok? Credit & links to you of course… thx very & great post regardless
Fine with me, thank you!
Amazing thank you
COVID has made us all love the idea of waiting to travel different places!
It sure has!
Scotland has some bloody lovely parts (most of it tbh), if you are a bit stretched for time might I recommend the Isle of Arran? There is something for everyone there and the ferry ride us short & cheap.
Scotland is one on my list, Fort William where Ben Nevis is is beautiful. Would recommend the Brecon beacons too
Thanks for the recommendations!
Yeees!! You need to come to Scotland. Edinburgh is such a beautiful city to visit especially on the odd days when we get some sunshine. I would love to do the North Coast 500 too that is definitely on my list when Covid ends and St Ives looks utterly beautiful too.
Ahah i’d love to visit Edinburgh!
I have only been to Southampton out of this list (mainly because I studied at uni in Portsmouth so it was close- also a couple of my uni best friends live their) . But I also REALLY want to go to Scotland and Bath and I was planning on going to Bath solo last year but COVID got in the way 🤣🤣
Ah that’s a shame! Hopefully you can go soon!
Lovely picks, I’ve heard St. Ives is beautiful!
I’m desperate to see more of the UK as soon as possible and I have a few of these places on my list too. Bath and Lincoln both look incredible and I’m really hoping we get to Edinburgh at Christmas as we were supposed to go last year. Fingers crossed we’re all able to travel again soon xx

Hope you get to visit all the places you want!
I would love to explore more of the U.K, I’m so guilty of not seeing enough of it! The expense always puts me off, I didn’t have a car until recently and trains here can be so expensive. I also want to do a Scottish road trip so badly, it looks beautiful! xx
Trains can definitely be a bit pricy! x
I don’t know if it’s a middle-class American thing per se, but when I say I’m going on holiday/vacation, I definitely don’t mean I’m ~leaving~ the country; I mean I’m going somewhere within the States :’) Otherwise, I’d say something like “i’m going abroad to ___” As an outsider looking in, holiday culture in the UK is something to behold & I’m a little jealous that y’all have Europe on your back doorstep and can jet off to so many countries for your vacations 😉 x
I think it’s because America is SO BIG compared to the UK. I do call holidays in the UK “holidays” as well but for the sake of blog posts etc I like to say staycation to make it easier 🙂 x
I think America’s size definitely contributes :’) ahhh, that makes sense! x
Thanks for sharing, the places that you would like to visit post COVID they are all great places to visit 🙂
I hope I get to go!
Bath is a lovely place to stay, especially if you can go when the Christmas market is on, it all looks so pretty.
I’d love to go to a Christmas market!
In the US, a staycation definitely means staying at home for vacation, but that’s probably because the US is huge, so it wouldn’t make sense to say staycation after a whole day of flying somewhere. I would love to see the places on your list someday. I’ve been to several countries but haven’t made it to the UK yet and it looks gorgeous. Hopefully soon.
Oh I totally agree with that, with the US being so big!
I am seriously desperate for a beach break. I need to go to Cornwall and remind myself how beautiful the world can be
Rosie
Oh same girl x
It is my dream to do a road trip around Scotland, I’d love to the Scotland 500 trip! I visited Southampton for a day or two a few years ago before going on a cruise and I loved it. Liverpool (my home city) is a fantastic place to visit if you haven’t already, I couldn’t recommend it enough!
I’ve never been to Liverpool so thank you for the suggestion!
So many beautiful places! I’d love to visit Bath, it definitely looks like an interesting place to explore xx
Same, looks so beaut!
I totally agree, staycations are NOT in my home haha, I’m sick of these walls! I really want to go visit Scotland a lot more. I’ve seen Edinburgh but would love to see more of the countryside there xx
http://www.iridescentplaces.com
Hahaha right! I love the countryside! x
You will love Bath! It’s so beautiful and cosy, perfect place for a staycation. I stayed in a spa hotel and it was divine! I also really want to go to St Ives I haven’t been there or to Cornwall – I really hope I get to go eventually! This year would be nice!
Oh wow I can’t wait to visit!
I’m so happy I came upon your blog! I live part time in Edinburgh, Scotland for the past 3 years and I STILL have so much more or the UK to explore.
Thank you for the recommendations’
Wow, lucky you!
These all sound like such amazing places to visit! I am sure wanting to be able to travel again too!
Me too. Fingers crossed!
Ugh this makes me want to visit the UK so badly! When things are better, that’s the first place I’ll go. at this rate it may be 2024 or 2025….
Hopefully you can get here before then, haha!
These are some great locations. I’m lucky that I live quite close to Bath. Its such a pretty place, I never get tired of it. I’d love to explore Scotland too.
Oh wow, lucky you!
All of the places you mentioned look like a travel dream. I’m not from the UK so all of these places are very attractive to me. If I ever visit UK I’ll make sure to visit at least some of them.

Hope you manage to come over and visit!
I’ve love to go to the lake district. Or peak district. Cos I can never remember which one is miles away and which it is feasible to get to, aha. If you and Lisa do Bath, that is a blog post I want to read! Hopefully we can get the chance to go to some of these places soon.
I think The Lake District is further away! It’s near Cumbria and took us around 4.5 hours to get there!
I would love to visit Scotland, and the Isle of Lewis in particular, thanks to family ties and history. I live in Cornwall though, so it would quite some road trip!
Not wishing to put a damper on your plans, but St Ives is absolute murder in summer. Carbis Bay, just along the coast, is less crowded, although it’s hosting the G7 this year, so things might get interesting! Sennen Cove or Porthcurno are also good spots out that way 😊
Wow quite a road trip indeed! But yes I can imagine St Ives is haha!
Jenny, DO viist Edinburbough. I loved it when I stayed for a week. Of course, I came over from Canada and everything is so old world in Europe so it’s likely more exciting for me but honestly, it was so lovely. Of course I wanted to see all the castles, Holyrood was lovely, Edinburbough a bit too military for my taste, and you were more or less escorted through, but we also hopped up to Sterling and that was amazing! I don’t know about the city itself, but the castle was lovely. I honestly am dying to visit London and other parts of the UK again. Anyway, lovely post, I think I’d like to see Bath too as the history there intrigues me. I’m a nerd LOL all Tudor and Austen LOL
Give Edinburgh another shot! I live in Leith, Edinburgh a quaint we town on the outskirts.
The city can be intimidating with all of the new tourism but I promise it is so worth it! You just need to explore off the Royal Mile and into the heart of the city ❤️
Glad you enjoyed your visit! If you ever find yourself in London, let me know!
Absolutely LOVE Bath. Have only been for the day but hope to go for a weekend when we are back to normal.
Hope you manage to get there for a longer trip!
I love a staycation! I’ve been to a few of these places before, I absolutely loved my lil holiday to Edinburgh – there was so much to do and see. I can’t wait to go again when everything is back to normal. Bath is also a favourite place of mine, although I haven’t been there in so long. xx
Ah so jealous!
St Ives is one on the list for us. Also – Scotland…you absolutely must. A drive in the Highlands, or a short stay in Inverness, ah oh my god. The landscape id breath taking. I am dying to go to the Isles of Harris, Lewis and Skye in Scotland. That will be happening, as soon as the time is right. Bath is a beautiful city. Quaint, charming and pretty. Sally Lunns Cakes shop is a definite stop off point and the Roman Baths – plus the outdoor roof top pool. We’ve toured many parts of the country and we always amazed at what’s on our doorstep xx
A lot of people have recommended these places so I guess I’ll be adding them to my list!
Firstly, thank you so much for the shout out! And I’m very pleased to see Bath is at the top of your list, I would LOVE to show you around 🙂 Perishing pandemic… Also Scotland, if we ever relocated it would be to Dundee, which has everything you could wish for: close to the sea, nature, a big city and not far from an airport. Great picks, Jenny, hope we can make Bath a reality soon! xxx
Haha you’re welcome! Can’t wait for our trip, whenever it happens! Dundee sounds like the perfect location!
Great list! Lincoln is such a cool city, it’s diverse as it’s a uni town but has so many pretty sights! The Steel Hill that leads to the cathedral is lined with some amazing small boutiques, I loved it. Hope you get chance to visit all! 🙂

Can’t wait to finally go and visit it properly!
Bath is lovely for a staycation! I used to live in Bristol and Bath was a nice break away. Picturesque and a calm place. And I’ve never been to Scotland either! This is a great list, thanks for sharing 🙂
Sounds perfect!
I’ve been to Bath and I absolutely loved it there, I went for the Christmas Market in 2019 and it’s somewhere I would love to visit again! Southampton is another place I would love to explore, you can’t a bit of time by the coast! x
Lucy | http://www.lucymary.co.uk
I want to go to a Christmas market so bad!
You make a great case for me ‘crossing the pond’. Such great places to visit!
Haha hope you can make a trip one day!
Lovely post. I really liked Bath and Lincoln and would love to go to St Ives.
Can’t wait to visit both of those!
I would really LOVE to go on a Scottish roadtrip as I’ve actually never been!

Same it’d be such a fun experience!
I haven’t been visiting much the UK since i have been living here. So we are opting for travelling more here whenever it’s safe. St Ives and Bath are on out list too! Also the lake District and Scotland, only heard great things about them and can’t wait to visit! Thanks for sharing x
The Lake District is SO beaut!
I definitely want a staycation when I can! If you do come to Scotland, I highly recommend visiting Skye, it’s honestly got some of the most beautiful scenery. If you do the NC500, that’s also got beautiful scenery.
Thanks for the recommendations!
I am so in love with Bath ! It’s definitely so beautiful in all the pictures & when I move that side, it will be one of my first staycations 😍
I can’t wait to go!
I love all Peak District places. There is so much to explore. I could stay there a whole summer, blogging, reading and exploring. =D
We went to Lincoln last year and it was so beautiful. I had no idea what to expect but I can’t wait to go back. That hill up to the cathedral is a killer though!
Bath has been top of my list for a while as well, every time I see a picture of friends there, I get serious envy!
I really hope this year we can at least staycation in the UK, I am certainly in no rush to jump on a plane any time soon x
Hahahah yesss I’ve heard about the hill! And no, neither am I. I think the UK will be our stage for holidays for some time!
Scotland is on my list of places I would like to visit in the UK to and bath is meant to be so beautiful!! St Ives is gorgeous, long journey but so worth it. I love Cornwall.
Scotland is a MUST!
Very long journey! I’ve been to Cornwall before and it took around 6.5 hours but was so worth it x
Cool destinations. I miss traveling
Thanks for sharing

You’re welcome x
I have been doing this too… Making a list of all the places I wanna show my kids after this pandemic is over… We are up to 56 now… In a mean time we are going to get to know our own country…We have been doing little day trips or weekend trip to most amazing little towns in Croatia that even I did not know existed…
P.S. Also Bath is such a wondeful magicial place. Make sure to find Bathwick Meadow when you are there… If you have a vivid imagination you can find faries living there 😉
Thanks for the recommendation!
