However, if you struggle to sit still, then a walking tour of a city’s architecture might just be the trip of a lifetime.

Not sure where to go? Consider a holiday to Lisbon. Portugal’s capital is full of incredible feats of art and engineering! And here are five of the best buildings to visit on you trip.
1. Jerónimo’s Monastery
Built in the 15th century, this monastery is one of Portugal’s best examples of late Gothic architecture.
A masterpiece of cloisters, vaulted ceilings, and columns – each of which has unique carvings of sea motifs, fitting with the eras desire for voyages to far distant lands.
The garden outside is also home to a pavilion that was built in Thailand in 2011 and shipped to Portugal to mark the 500th year anniversary of the two countries’ alliance.
2. Belém Tower
Lisbon’s Belém district is home to the eponymous Belém Tower. Once both a fortress and a port throughout its long history, this four-story tower was constructed in 1514 and provides great views of the ocean.
While it only serves as a tourist attraction now, Belém Tower one of Lisbon’s most iconic landmarks, and is a reminder of the power Portugal held over the land and sea.
3. Museum of Art, Architecture, and Technology
It would be embarrassing if a museum of architecture wasn’t good enough to make a list.
Luckily, Lisbon’s Museum of Art, Architecture, and Technology looks incredible. Designed by Architect Amanda Levete and opened in 2016, this building is a modern masterpiece of industrial design.
If you like your art galleries, then don’t just explore the exterior. For just €9 you can take a wander around the museum’s fantastic exhibitions.
4. Oriente Station
If you were impressed by the Museum of Art, Architecture, and Technology, then you’re going to love visiting Gare do Oriente.
Built in 1998, the station combines the Gothic with the Modern to create a building that you won’t be able to resist adding to your Instagram feed.
The station is one of Lisbon’s main transport hubs, so it’s a good idea to avoid visiting during rush hour.
5. Pena Palace
Located in the stunning Sintra Hills, Pena Palace is a Romanticist castle that looks as though it would be more at home in a fairy tale.
Not only is the palace a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but it’s also one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal, making this beautiful castle is a must for any Lisbon tourist.
