collaborative post // There are many benefits to having your own beauty business. The opportunity to build your own brand and be your own boss often draws many of us in, with the extra benefits of working your own hours, not having to commute, and building upon your existing skills. Being freelance is not always easy or as glamorous as it may appear, here are our top tips to ensure you succeed.

How to succeed?

Keep up to date with industry trends

The beauty industry is ever-changing, therefore it is important that you stay on top of these trends to appeal to clients and stay ahead of the market. This could be anything from learning nail art designs that are popular, to qualifying to carry out a specific treatment that is sort after.

Build up your online presence

In this day and age, many of us will view businesses with no online presence as unreliable or lower quality than those who have built up a following, and regularly update clients with photographs of their treatments. Having an online presence is a free and easy way to attract and retain customers, keeping them engaged with your brand.

Always use contracts

Always have contracts in place to keep yourself and your business protected. This should be with all suppliers and landlords, and you should always keep a copy to refer back to.

Look at competition to set your prices

Make sure you have looked at your competitor’s prices and adjust yours accordingly. It is important to be realistic when it comes to setting prices, but also ensure that you are still making enough money for it to be worthwhile.

Invest in high-quality tools and equipment at first

We have all heard the saying that a tradesman is only as good as their tools – and this is especially true within the beauty industry. Make sure that you are investing in high-quality equipment, as not only will this produce better results but it will also make your job much more efficient. This could be anything from a new pedicure chair, to files or hair treatments.

Outsource when needed

When you are freelancing, it can be hard to keep on top of all the jobs yourself. Often it is less stressful and easier to outsource work to a specialist, such as an accountant or cleaner. This will mean you can spend your time helping clients, and ensuring other jobs still get completed to a high standard.

Set limits between work and your personal life

Burnout is very common in freelancers, so it is important to set clear work hours and boundaries. Make sure that you schedule holidays in advance so you can accommodate clients in advance, meaning you can completely relax whilst you are away.
