ad | Now I don’t often jump on fashion trends but one that combines a neutral palette (my favourite), beautiful fabrics and layering alongside a love for books is a trend that I can certainly get on board with. And if you’ve not heard of it, say hello to the Poetcore aesthetic – your new favourite fashion trend which, incidentally, is also perfect for Autumn.
What is the vibe of the Poetcore fashion aesthetic?
So before we even look at the actual clothing pieces which make up this style, it’s good to establish the actual vibe of the style. The feelings that the style itself might illicit when you look at it or dress like it. So, Poetcore. We’re not as formal as dark academia and certainly not as whimsy as Cottagecore.
But I do think that Autumn is the perfect season for this style because Poetcore feels like a slow Sunday afternoon. Spending time drinking tea and reading your favourite book. Perhaps visiting an old library and journaling. Deep chats and contemplation. Less screen time. Analogue. Wandering around a book shop with nowhere to be.
Poetcore style with Very.co.uk
If that sounds up your street, then lets look at the sort of pieces you might expect to see in this Poetcore aesthetic. I was kindly gifted some items from Very to really embody the Poetcore vibe for this post and I absolutely love all of the pieces that I chose.
I’m definitely a neutral girlie – despite wanting to add colour into my wardrobe, I tend to always sway back towards my neutral favourites. That’s not to say you can’t add some pops of colour into your Poetcore aesthetic but for the most part, it’ll be muted Earthy tones with layers and different fabrics.
Very make it easy to find all your staples in one place. From shoes to trench coats, chunky knits to shirts, you can shop everything in one go and they really do offer the widest selection of items from the Very own range to designer labels, allowing you to personalise and make the style your own.
A Poetcore wardrobe can certainly be personalised and adapted to your own preferences. With soft layers, beautiful fabrics and timeless silhouettes within this literary inspired style, you can dress it up or down, go for darker neutrals or lighter, add a shirt for a smarter look or ballet flats for something more casual.
That being said, here are some staples you need in your wardrobe to achieve the Poetcore aesthetic:
Trench coat
A good trench coat is one of the best staples you can have in your wardrobe for Autumn. Trench coats gives you that layer of protection from the changing seasons and the slightly colder weather, without making you too hot like Winter coats often do.
And the relaxed and vintage inspired style and silhouette of a trench coat is perfect for your Poetcore fashion aesthetic without looking too structured and formal.
Loafers
A good pair of loafers are perfect for the Poetcore aesthetic, especially in black or brown with a nice chunky gold fastening for a bit of depth. Loafers are an excellent Autumn shoe as well, giving you the comfort and structure you need for cosy Autumn days out.
Cosy knits
I think we all associate being cosy with a lovely knitted jumper or cardigan and for the Poetcore lovers among us, you’re in luck because you will be spending your Autumn wearing your cosy knits. The texture and layering aspect of a cardigan or jumper is perfect for this aesthetic and gives you the freedom to choose beautiful fabrics and different styles such as roll necks, cable knits or oversized v-neck sweatshirts.
Structured trousers
A pair of structured trousers are one of my favourite things to wear, especially in the Autumn when paired with browns and creams. I’m definitely more of a trousers girl and luckily a gorgeous pair of trousers paired with a beautiful knit and loafers is an ideal outfit for your Poetcore style.
Pleated skirts
However, the great thing about the Poetcore aesthetic is that it works just as well with skirts as it does with trousers, so if you’re more of a skirt person then you’re in luck. Think more vintage style pleated mini or midi skirts, paired with tights and socks.
Vintage accessories
And finally, accessories. No outfit is complete without them. And with the Poetcore aesthetic, you can expect silk scarfs, brooches, leather satchels and gold jewellery.
I love this fashion style and I think I’ve always leaned towards elements of it without going all in. I love neutrals and texture and layers all of which are ideal elements of this Poetcore aesthetic. I feel like this style really embodies slower living, stepping back in time and really savouring the little things in life like a warm cup of tea and a good book.
