AD // My garden office has been complete for around half a year now and it’s become one of my favourite places to be. I thought originally when I had finished my office, the content about it would fizzle out but actually, that damn office has provided me with so many content ideas!

I’ve had quite the experience designing, decorating and curating my perfect home office over the last year. Since February 2020, when I first met with my builder to discuss size and placement. It seems like a lifetime ago! We had so much to think about, such as location of my office, building materials, even which skip hire company to use.
And I know that a lot of people have obviously been working from home since 2020 and have found the value from doing so. I can imagine that home office renovations SHOT up last year and will continue to do so as people’s and businesses way of working continues to change.
I put a LOT of thought into my garden office and was very specific in some of the things I wanted and envisioned. It’s my space and my space only, I was determined not to let anyone else’s opinions influence me.
So if you’re planning a home office – whether you’re getting something new completely built like I did or simply renovating a room you already have in your home – here are 5 important things to think about when it comes to the design!
Wall colour
The colour of my office was a really important factor for me when it came to designing my office. I was lucky enough to work with the Lick paint brand on the colour of my office and I had a colour consultation with a professional interior designer to help me find the perfect colour, based on what I want and the sort of vibe I want.
When it comes to an office, it’s definitely important to not just go for whatever your favourite colour is and think about the sort of feel you want in your office. I went for a light sage green because it’s a calming colour and nothing that gets me too hyped up!
Flooring
Obviously the next thing to think about is flooring and there’s a ton of lovely options to choose from. I personally went for a grey laminate wood-style flooring (which I know a lot of people don’t like but I personally love it with my interior). But you’ve got wood style flooring, laminate or even a carpet. It really does depend on personal preference and the overall vibe and feel of your office.
Lighting
When I was building my office (haha “building”, watching the builders more like), I always knew that I wanted a LOT of natural light. With my office being a separate building in the garden, I wanted to be able to see the green of the garden, the trees, flowers and bushes and not need to have a lamp or light on all day. Which is exactly what I got and I love it!
So there are two things to consider when it comes to lighting: Electrical lighting and natural light. What sized windows do you want or do you already have? How much natural light gets in? Which direction does the sun set? (which is something to consider if you take a lot of photos in your office).
Decor
I mentioned in one of my first blog posts that I wasn’t going to have anything sentimental in my office. No pictures of loved ones or anything like that. Not even my dog. And I’ve kept to that ever since. This is personal for me but I don’t want ANYTHING to influence me when I’m working. I’m an empath, so I’m very easily affected by other people and things in my life.
Furniture
Furnishing my office was my favourite part and I loved shopping for furniture. I went backwards and forwards a lot on the type of furniture I want, the colours, materials, wood etc. But I finally settled on white wood for my bookcase and office desk with a gorgeous pink chair for my cozy corner.
It’s worth looking at your office as a whole to see what sort of furniture will look and feel the best. How much space do you have? Do you want to go for wood? What shade? There’s endless questions, so this isn’t a point to overlook!
