If you’re a reader and sometimes struggle deciding which book to read next, then I have the perfect 2027 reading challenge for you! A new year is a great time to start a new challenge or set yourself a goal but not all goals need to be boring or difficult. I think it’s so important to have something fun and exciting on your goals list for a new year, to keep yourself excited and motivated for the year ahead. For us book lovers, a reading challenge can do just that!

I haven’t personally completed this challenge myself but I did try it a few years ago. I got quite far and managed to tick a fair few off the list before some of the prompts got a bit difficult but the main thing is, is that I found it fun and an interesting way to approach my reading style and the books I was going to read next.
We all have our favourite genres – which is great – but it’s also nice to step out of our comfort zone with reading sometimes and delve into genres we would normally steer clear of. Your 2027 reading challenge will be an excellent way for you to do that, if expanding your reading is something you want to focus on this New Year.
I also think during a stressful time in life, it’s important to still have ways to challenge yourself and focus on your personal growth. Of course switching off and relaxing and taking care of your mental health is incredibly important but once that’s in place and you feel like you’re in a good mindset to work on something new, it’s great to have that focus. And a reading challenge can be a great, low-key way to do that.
Because the start of a new year CAN be stressful. Despite the chaos and magic of Christmas being over, January can often lead to some pretty rubbish moods for a lot of people. The lack of daylight can severely impact those with SAD and just the general grind of every day life, getting back to work, saving money in the new year and the prospect of a new year ahead and what it might contain can be stressful and sad.
Reading has always been my favourite hobby – but not just to pass the time or to relax. Reading and books has been the thing that’s been with me through every hard period of my life. Being able to get stuck into a book, even just for 15 minutes of respite from whatever it might be that I’m struggling with is a Godsend for me and I really couldn’t love books enough for the peace, the magic, the entertainment, the excitement, the revelations and the comfort they bring people.
If you need some book recommendations for any of the categories below, I’m always updating my Goodreads account where you can find all the books I’ve read, dating back to 2013. And I like to think I have a decent range of types of books in there!
Here is your 2027 reading challenge:
I do like this particular challenge because the prompts aren’t too difficult and it’s unlikely you’ll struggle too much to find a book which fits into each one.
Tips for completing your 2027 reading challenge:
- Have fun with it! A reading challenge is supposed to be fun so as soon as it starts to stress you out, take a step back
- If you’re struggling with a prompt, move onto the next one and come back to it
- Read your bookshelf first: find books you already own that fit into these prompts to kick it off
- Do the challenge with someone: You can both pick the same prompt and discuss the books you each read for it
