ad | Most of us have some sort of hobby or interest that others might consider geeky. For me, it’s books. For non-readers, they would definitely look at me and think how geeky it is how much I’m obsessed with books. But whether that’s books or trains, Star Wars or Harry Potter, dinosaurs or something else entirely, there’s plenty of “geeky” interests to go around.

When I was younger and in school, there was definitely less acceptance of these things. I think people hid their geeky interests more in case they were picked on or someone made fun of them. There was definitely much more pressure to fit in and follow the crowd.
But these days it’s entirely different and for a plethora of positive reasons!
Thanks to the internet, it’s easier than ever to embrace our geeky interests more fully and even find other people with the same interests as us. Francis Bourgeois is someone that comes to mind, with his intense interest of trains allowing him to build a following of 26k on YouTube!
If you have a geeky interest, whatever it might be and you’re a bit more reluctant to be as open with it, here are some convincing reasons why you should embrace it instead!

It’s fun
Everything about embracing a geeky interest is fun. And at a time where fun doesn’t come around as often as we might like, it’s so important to squeeze as much fun and joy out of things as possible. Whether that’s going to a convention, having a geeky movie marathon, buying a star wars tshirt or a gamer t shirt, depending on what geek t shirt suits your interests!
It’s interesting
Trust me, hearing about someone else’s interests is interesting, especially if it’s vastly different from your own. When I’m at a gathering or meeting new people for the first time, I absolutely love to hear about things they love because it’s cool to think about something from a different perspective.
You can meet like-minded people
With the internet, it’s easier than ever to meet people who have similar interests as you. It wasn’t so easy at school, when we had no internet. If our friends didn’t like the same thing we did, they we had to enjoy that thing alone. With is fine but it’s also nice to connect with others about it as well.
It’s a creative outlet
A geeky interest can definitely be a creative outlet, which is so important for all of us to have in some way or another. Perhaps you hone in on your creativity by making an outfit for a convention or using your interest to paint or write – fanfic is a big one!
It could lead to opportunities
And finally, it could definitely lead to opportunities. Especially now with the internet! A YouTube channel based on your favourite geeky hobby could take off or you could start a successful blog or Instagram account. If you’re crafty, you could even start a small business, making products in the theme of your interest!
