ad | I always remember reading a quote from author John Green about being a geek (or a nerd) which always stuck with me, ever since I myself started geeking out about things as a child. I was an only child, so I had a lot of time and space to get obsessed with things and boy did I!

The quote from John Green in question was:
“Nerds like us are allowed to be unironically enthusiastic about stuff. Nerds are allowed to love stuff, like jump-up-and-down-in-the-chair-can’t-control-yourself love it. When people call people nerds, mostly what they’re saying is ‘you like stuff.’ Which is just not a good insult at all. Like, ‘you are too enthusiastic about the miracle of human consciousness’.”
Which I think is a beautiful way of describing how you feel when you nerd out about things.
For me as a young girl, it was Harry Potter, the band McFly and Barbie’s. I was utterly obsessed with all 3, I had scrapbooks, posters, dressed up – the lot. I have many funny photos to look back on as well (which I won’t be sharing!)
The fact of the matter is, is that being interested in stuff and being a nerd about things is absolutely nothing to be ashamed about. As Green says, all it means is that you’re interested in stuff. You take the time to learn and immerse yourself in a topic.
So whether you’re into Harry Potter like I was, trains, engineering, LEGO, Anime, books, Lord of the Rings, Disney, Star Wars, the list is endless, here are some things you can do to embrace your nerdiness proudly.
How to Embrace Your Geekiness in 5 Different Ways:

Never apologise for the things you nerd out about
There will always be someone out there who is trying to make you feel bad or stupid or silly for enjoying what you love. We all love different things but that doesn’t make any one person’s interests better than another. So never apologise for what you love and what you geek out about.
Make time in your life to embrace what makes you happy
It can be easy to get caught up in every day life, responsibilities, your job and keeping your home clean that you sometimes forget to actually take the time to enjoy the things you love. Remember that that time is very valuable too. Whatever you geek out about brings you joy, so it’s worth investing time in.
Display your geekiness proudly
There’s a t-shirt for that! There are loads of merchandised clothes you can purchase to display what you’re geeky about. Geek outfits is one of those places. You can find geek hoodies full of your favourite geeky things like Star Wars, dinosaurs, science and more as well as these nerdy button up shirts which I personally love.
Attend events related to your interests
The thing you’re a nerd about doesn’t have to stay in the confines of your own imagination or own bedroom. There’s always SOMEONE else who likes the same thing as you, so search for events that you can go to which allows you to embrace your geekiness even more. Talks, panels, readings, comic-con, there’s lots out there!
Talk about your geekiness on social media
Talking about the things you geek out about online is a fantastic way to virtually meet likeminded people who love the same stuff as you! Perhaps you could end up creating a little online group of people who all geek out about the same thing or even end up meeting some of your new online geek friends in person!
