Is It Time for a Fresh Start? Considerations for Moving Abroad *

Every so often, it’s good to take on a new challenge and turn your life upside down. Change keeps up on our toes and makes life interesting. If you love to travel, and you’re feeling brave, why not take the plunge and move abroad? If you like the sound of a new adventure, here are some considerations to bear in mind.

Choosing the right location and finding work: This is perhaps the most important step you’ll take. Where do you want to go? What do you want to do when you get there? What kind of vision do you have for your new life? Are you eager to land a high-powered job in a bustling city? Do you dream of indulging your creative talents in a beach house overlooking the sea? Are you aiming to set up a new business, or can you carry on your current job and work from home? If you’re still working, your job opportunities may influence your search. If you’re hoping to cut down or even retire, there will be more important factors to consider.

Don’t rush into making a decision: It’s always beneficial to research your options extensively. You may think that New York seems like a perfect option. But if you’ve never been there, you may find that it’s not really like the movies at all. Living somewhere and seeing the streets on screen are two very different things. Once you’ve chosen your destination, explore your options. Sign up to some recruitment agencies and search online for vacancies. Find out about setting up your own business or ask your current employer about a transfer.

Finding a perfect property: When you move, you may need to think about whether you rent or buy. Contact local agents and get an idea of what you can expect to get with the budget you have available. Match your property search to your life goals. Are you looking for a loft-style apartment in a hip area of London? Are you searching for a waterfront villa in Marbella? Are you keen to escape it all and focus your online search on the words luxury real estate in Nevis? When you’ve got some ideas, arrange some viewings. Go with the property that makes you feel like you can make your dreams a reality.

Keeping in touch: Thanks to advances in technology, we can now keep in touch with friends and family all over the world. Video calling enables us to see the faces of our loved ones. We can send emails and text messages within seconds. We can hop on a flight to almost anywhere and be reunited in the space of a few hours.

Moving abroad is a big step. If you’re thinking about living in a different country, there are lots of factors that may play a part. Consider possible locations and think carefully about what you want to achieve from the relocation. Explore different choices, and think about getting a job and finding your dream home. Arrange some fact-finding trips. Take advantage of the Internet to look for properties and job opportunities. Good luck!

  1. As an American I don’t recommend it here. We have a problem with violence and intolerance here. Our healthcare system frankly sucks too. You can find better options in Canada or Scandinavia.

  2. I’ve never managed the overseas move but I like to keep life moving and try not to become stagnant. I genuinely love the UK. I love to politics, the changing weather, our crazy little British ways and almost all the people. I hope to see more of the world and would love to try living somewhere different one day but for now I live in my hometown and am happy so don’t see it changing anytime soon x
