Affiliate links // I’d never heard of the phrase “auto buy author” until fairly recently and whilst yes, I had been living under a rock, it also got me thinking about my own auto-buy authors. I don’t have many, I’ll admit. But the one’s I do have hold a pretty special place in my bookish heart.

Auto Buy Authors

It’s it just beautiful when you love and trust an author so much that you don’t even have to THINK about buying their next book? You just do. It’s like a reflex.

I have 5 auto-buy authors that I want to share with you in today’s blog post and they’re all pretty different from each other and my reasons for them being my auto-buy authors vary.

But I adore each and every one of these authors and their books which bring so much joy into my life and my reading routine.

Some of these authors and books have gripped me so much to the point where I’ve not been able to put the book down.

They’ve made me cry… for 3 hours.

They’ve left me pondering and wondering and questioning and debating.

They’ve had me gasping out loud.

And had me recommending their damn books to literally ANYONE that will listen to me.

So here are my 5 auto-buy authors, who’s books I don’t even have to think about purchasing!

Auto Buy Authors

Claire Douglas

Claire Douglas is one of my favourite Thriller writers. I was blown away by the first book of hers I read, which was The Sisters and her books just seemed to get better and better. She is the Queen of mislead and suspense. And don’t even get me STARTED on her endings.  If you love an ending which is going to leave you questioning everything you just read… Claire Douglas is for you.

C.J Tudor

I first read C.J Tudor’s work back when I was a book blogger an was sent a copy of her first novel, The Chalk Man, to review. This book drummed up a lot of hype. And rightly so. C.J Tudor has continued to write eerie, chilling, gripping and unique books with The Chalk Man now set to become a series on BBC! Excited? Me?

John Green

Probably a very cliché choice here but damn it, I love John Green. Have Have I grown out of The Fault in Our Stars hype? Yes, definitely. But I still love his work and am eager to pick up anything (and everything) he writes. My favourite of Green’s books has to be Looking for Alaska, closely followed by Paper Towns. But I was a big fan of his newest book, Turtles All the Way Down.

Markus Zusak

Markus Zusak is a literally genius. In my honest and humble opinion. You know that book I said made me cry for 3 hours? It was The Book Thief. I wish I was kidding when I say 3 hours. Markus is a beautiful writer. Just absolutely stunning. In fact, it’s so beautiful I literally don’t know what to say. I didn’t enjoy his latest, Bridge of Clay nowhere near as much as The Book Thief and I Am the Messenger but it was still a stunning read.

Karen Thompson-Walker

Okay granted Karen Thompson-Walker only has 2 books out but I know if and when she releases more, I will be THERE on the order button. Thompson-Walker is the author of my favourite book of ALL TIME, The Age of Miracles. I’ve read that damn book about 7 times. I read her latest, The Dreamers at the very start of 2021. And it’s also an incredible read.

I would absolutely love to hear about your auto-buy authors! Whose books don’t you even have to think about buying? Let me know in the comments!

  1. The Book Thief is on my TBR and you’ve made me want to read it even more! I love anything Taylor Jenkins-Reid has written so they’re a new addition to my auto-buy authors list!

    Tash – A Girl with a View

  2. It has been such a long time since I read a John Green book. I have never come across any of the other authors though so I will need to check them out. At the moment Lucy Foley and Robert Galbraith are on my auto buy list.

  3. I need to read more Markus Zusak after finally delving into The Book Thief at the very end of 2020, and I remember you recommending The Messenger to me, so that’s next for me to pick up! Leigh Bardugo is the only modern author I can think of who will always be an auto-buy for me, and other than that, I have quite a few classic authors that I LOVE and will therefore make it my life’s work to read every single one of their novels :’) x

  4. I don’t believe I’ve read anything from
Your listed authors but I’m going to check them out! Mine is Sarah J Maas and Kristin Hannah. Absolutely phenomenal authors.

  5. Great list, I find it so difficult to narrow down my auto-buy authors haha! It’s been years since I read a John Green book but I absolutely adored him. And I still need to read The Book Thief, everyone I know has recommended it to me. On my list would be Taylor Jenkins Reid, Brit Bennett, Fredrik Backman and Jojo Moyes 🙂

  6. I have left behind my auto buy authors with my Goodreads groups LOL I used to auto buy a few authors, and then got seriously let down (mind you, these were series authors and those do tend to have hit and miss reads) and I don’t really auto buy anymore. There are some authors I repeatedly read and I will buy many of their books, but not all of them. I think I am adding a couple of your auto buy authors to my TBR list though!

  7. I only read something from John green from the list, I jumped on the wagon with The Fault in our stars, but should read something else from him too! I think currently my auto buy authors would be Talia Hibbert, ANgie Thomas, Maggie Stiefvater and Leigh Bardugo. Thank you for sharing x

  8. I don’t get a chance to read like I used to anymore which is sad, but when I did I would always buy Sophie Kinsella, Marian Keyes and Cecelia Ahern. My favourite book of all time is Anybody Out There by Marian Keyes. That book makes me cry every time I read it, without fail!

  9. The Book Thief also made me sob for hours. Anything by Cecilia Ahern is an auto buy for me – I just love the escapism and how easy her books are to read

  10. Philippa Gregory, Taylor Adams and Rosamund Hodge are my auto-buys. Rosamund Hodge writes beautiful twists on fairytales, whilst Taylor Adams is a brilliant thriller writer if that’s more your cup of tea!

  11. The concept of an auto-buy author is also new to me and it got me thinking too about whose books I buy automatically. Only one came to mind; I have to read a book’s summary and sometimes an author puts something out that does not excite me as much as their previous book. When that happens, I pass.

With mysteries and thrillers I have discovered if I read too much of the same author I start to predict the endings of the following books. I try to shuffle between different writers in the same genre to keep the excitement flowing!
Thanks so much for sharing some intriguing series by writers close to your bookish heart to check out! <3

    1. Oh I totally agree with your point about Thrillers being predictable with the same authors. Claire Douglas is NEVER predictable to me, which is why I never hesitate to pick up her books. As is C.J Tudor!

  12. Thanks for sharing this awesome list – I miss reading when it wasn’t just always on screens!

  13. God I miss reading. I just don’t seem to find the time nowadays. You’re list is really interesting though and has me checking them out on my kindle app. The Book Thief in particular has peaked my interest.

  14. Marcus Zusak is on my auto buy list. I’ve recently discovered Naomi Novik and am working through her substantial publications. Thanks for the recommendations, I’ll need to check them out.

  15. Why haven’t I heard of or read any books from these authors? I feel so behind on books right now haha. I definitely need to check them out. Also, the term “auto-buy authors” is really new to me. These writers must be really amazing to have you buy from them without even thinking. Lovely post. This gave me some checking out to do haha x

  16. I love Claire Douglas’s novels too and I have now another author who also manages to write biiig twists in her psychological thrillers, Heidi Perks so she’s also an auto-buy author for me, next to John Mars and Riley Sager..

  17. This is a great list of authors. After reading this, I realised that I have auto-buy authors. My auto-buy authors are Paige Toons, Liane Moriarty and Kody Keplinger. Thank you for sharing.

  18. I loved John Green back in the day, but I’m not really much of a contemporary YA reader these days. This post has definitely got me thinking about whether I have any auto-buy authors right now.

  19. John Green is on my auto-read list as well. I love everything he writes with my whole heart and while you might be over the TFiOS hype, I don’t think I ever will be. To this day, Paper Towns is one of my forever favorite books – though, I truly love them all. I haven’t read anything from the other authors you mentioned, but now I’ll have to look into them!

    1. Although I’m kinda over TFiOS hype, I was thinking about giving it a re-read this month. Just for old times sake! I did prefer Paper Towns and Looking for Alaska to TF though. Looking For Alaska is my favourite, I think!

  20. Great post! I don’t really have any auto-buy authors but I’ll have to check out some of these authors! I’ve heard of John Green’s books and they sound really good. Thank you for sharing this!

  21. Oh I love this post! I have a few Claire Douglas and C.J Tudor books on my shelf that now I definitely need to read ASAP! I also have had The Book Thief on my shelf for the longest time, so can’t wait to read that! My auto-buy author has to be Jodi Picoult and when I was younger it was very much Sophie Kinsella!

  22. I love CJ Tudor! I started my reading challenge this year with The Other People and am currently reading The Burning Girls. And the Book Thief is one of my favourite books – I’m definitely going to check out the rest of the authors you recommended.

  23. Great post! I’m definitely one of those readers who read a selection of authors rather than the same one and I don’t know hahah as there are so many author’s works which I admire – I used to love John Green x

  24. I love this. I also have my autobuy authors mainly in paranormal and NA romance and it is so hard to choose JUST 5! My top 5 would probably be Sherrilyn Kenyon, Colleen Hoover, Elle Kennedy, Christina Lauren, and Sally Thorne. Bonus autobuy author would be Abby Jimenez.

  25. I’ve never had an author like this! I’ve read a few books I’ve loved but then not been a fan of their other things. I’ve never read John green but I’ve always wanted to read the fault in our stars but know it would make me an emotional wreck!

  26. Ooh I absolutely love this idea! I’d not heard of the phrase auto buy author either! Claire Douglas would definitely have to be on my list too, The Sisters is still probably one of the best books I’ve ever read! I’ve not read anything by C.J Tudor before but I’ve seen her books recommended loads so I definitely think I need to pick one up soon xx

  27. I loved Looking for Alaska by John Green – it was a book that introduced me to YA and one I’ve returned to occasionally. I think over the years by auto buy authors has really changed but at the moment Juno Dawson, Talia Hibbert, Nora Roberts, Taylor Jenkins Reid, R.F Kaung are ones that spring to mind.

  28. I’ve only read one john green book but I’ve heard such great things about turtles all the way down! I’ve also read both the book thief and I am the messenger and I have bridge of clay on my shelf but its one of the ones thats so big I’m a little scared of it.

My autobuy authors are definitely Becky Albertalli and Taylor Jenkins Reid!

    1. That was a great read would definitely recommend! Haha Bridge of Clay was definitely my least favourite but it’s still a beautiful read! It’s a pretty hefty book isn’t it!

  29. I don’t know if auto buy authors means I don’t read the blurb but if that’s the case I never do this as some authors change genre. Ones that are my favourite and always read of theirs are Angela Marsons, Chris Carter, Anna Bell, Carol Wyer,

  30. I have a lot of fantasy authors on my auto-buy list – or more, an auto-read list as I must admit some of them I don’t actually own but will still read everything they write. Christopher Paolini is right on the top there, although I do also seem to have read everything Mark Lawrence has published. Loved this post!

  31. I love this idea! I must say a few of mine are Karin Slaughter, Stephen King and Louise Jensen! Anything they write, I’ll buy!

  32. I genuinely love some of John Greens books, I always love the stories he writes. C.J Tudor is also an author that I really enjoy!

Not on the list but I’m personally really found of Susan black for writings. She’s got such an incredible point of view x
