ad collaborative post // When it comes to black tie events, there are a few need-to-knows if you’re going to nail the dress code and look and feel a million dollars.

Whether you’ve been lucky enough to score an invite to a movie premier or are attending a formal dinner, the black tie dress code for women usually consists of an elegant, floor length gown, heels and glamorous finishing touches (think a bold lip and sleek updo).

To help you achieve a red carpet-worthy look, we’ve put together some key things to keep in mind when styling your black tie ensemble.

Length

A black tie event is the perfect excuse to get glammed up, and one of the few occasions in our social calendars that calls for a full length gown. As one of the most formal dress codes, second only to white tie attire, a full length or floor length dress is usually the expected standard – combining style and elegance.

Add drama to your look with a gown that pools behind you in a mermaid silhouette or opt for a dress that skims the floor for a more subtle and practical look. A thigh high split adds a flirty touch whilst maintaining an overall classic style.

Colour Scheme

Although the name may suggest otherwise, a black tie gown does not have to be exclusively black. Switch up your look and explore deep, rich tones of burgundy, emerald and navy in luxurious satin, silk and lace fabrics.

For the ultimate after dark style, choose a gown embellished with all over sequins, beading or 3D appliques. If lighter hues are more you, white and refreshing shades of nude and champagne look stunning paired with sparkling accessories and are perfect for the warmer months.

Accessories

When choosing the right accessories to compliment your look, less is more. Channel old Hollywood glamour with strings of delicate pearls, luxe diamante necklaces and sparkling drop earrings. Choose a stylish yet comfortable pair of heels in black, nude or a metallic finish so you can dance the night away and coordinate with a small clutch in the same shade.

Hair and Makeup

Complete your look with a soft, glamorous makeup look that highlights your natural beauty, with shades of shimmering bronzes and rosy pinks. For a bolder finish, lean into vintage glam and choose a vibrant red or deep burgundy lipstick.

If your gown has a simple neckline, wear your hair down in loose waves or show off a structured sweet heart neckline, one shoulder silhouette or beautiful backless style with a sleek updo.

When finding the perfect outfit for your next black tie event, keep these points in mind and you’ll be sure to nail your look.
