Everyone’s always talking about their Summer holidays and how excited they are to drink cocktails on the beach,  soak up the sun and do nothing for a week. It’s been YEARS since I’ve been on one of those types of holidays. And whilst I wouldn’t rule it out again, right now, I’d much prefer to do some Winter travel instead.

Partially because I don’t actually like the heat. So I can only imagine how uncomfortable I’d be trying to relax on a sun lounger when it’s upwards of 35 degrees. No thanks. But snow, ice and minus temperatures? YES PLEASE. Gimmie it all.

Going on holiday around Christmas and during Winter can definitely be a bit of a bank breaker. But it’s also the most magical time of the year. Doing some Winter travel can be the perfect way to end a year too. When you’re most in need of a break, after the previous 12 months of work, stress and busyness.

So here are some of the experiences and destinations firmly on my Winter travel wish list!

Skiing Holiday

I’ve been skiing before in La Plagne in France and I absolutely loved it. Although I went for a school trip and obviously I didn’t have any freedom on that holiday for our own safety. So I would love to go again and be able to do what I wanted, when I wanted – and also stick to slopes I felt more comfort on!

Mark Warner Ski Holidays have a ton of ski holiday packages in all of France’s top ski destinations – including La Plagne! And did you know, that La Plagne has the world’s biggest cable car? It’s a double decker!

The Luxury Chalet Company are experts when it comes to luxury ski holidays. They have in depth experience of the Swiss mountains and have access to all of the best luxury chalets. From chalets with private spa areas to fully catered corporate retreats, they’ll tailor your holiday to your needs.

Christmas Markets

Can you believe I’ve never been to a Christmas market? Nope, me neither. I’m hoping to rectify that this year – probably just somewhere close by and definitely in the UK. But in terms of Winter travel, I’d love to travel abroad for Christmas and visit some Christmas markets. I think Nuremberg in Germany would be a good choice!

Lapland

Of course Lapland is like, the ultimate Winter travel destination isn’t it? I’m so envious of anyone who’s visited Lapland! I can’t think of anywhere more perfect to be during Winter and Christmas – I bet it feels like a completely different world away from your own.

Santa Claus Village, the Ranua Zoo – home to arctic species, Pyhä-Luosto National Park and of course a stay in The SnowCastle of Kemi hotel (constructed every Winter from snow and ice!) As a lover of the cold, I couldn’t think of anything better!

Disneyland Paris

I feel like every travel style post I write, I always include Disneyland Paris in it. Despite the fact I’ve already been 3 times, it’s ALWAYS on my wish list. Because it’s my favourite place on Earth and at Christmas? Gosh, I could cry it’s so magical!

I went for New Year back in 2009/2010. And also in November in 2011. So both times they had all their Christmas stuff up and out and it really is the most magical thing. So I don’t think I could bring myself to go to Disneyland Paris at any other time of year.

What’s on your Winter travel wish list? Are you a sun worshiper or do you enjoy magical Christmas holidays too?

  1. hey jenny! I’m a snow bum myself! I love winter I’ve just started my own blog, right now I’m writing about central american destinations but the christmas markets here in france are just starting up so I’ll be posting that soon, I also snow board a lot and have up coming blogs about the best ski hills in the Canadian rockies! It would be awesome if you could follow my blog! I’m looking for fellow travelers to stay in contact with.

  2. Great read, thanks! Can’t wait for winter now 🙂 I love winter holidays! Have you considered the Xmas markets in Southern Germany? They are really gorgeous. Also Moscow at Xmas is pretty spectacular! Dreaming about it as I type.

  3. Wow – you’ve sparked my interest for sure! I haven’t heard of like any of these winter destinations for the most part. I mean, Lapland seems like a must-do at this point! Ha. Thanks for sharing.

  4. Well I am biased when it comes to Christmas Markets, but I would always recommend Berlin for those. I love my home city, but you can combine it with lots of sightseeing and Berlin has tons of Christmas Markets. Some more like a fair ground, some more traditional, some a bit more crafty, some big and some small. So there are a lot to choose from and most of them are close to main attractions as well so you can do sightseeing and warm up with some mulled wine or some nonalcoholic warm kids/fruit punch.

  5. Ah I was planning to visit Disneyland this winter but might have to stick to Scotland! Love this winter wish list, getting me in the mood for Christmas!

  6. I’d love to go skiing but I don’t know how haha. I would 100% fall over and embarrass myself but I guess that’s part of the process. I would really love to go to the north of Norway for a winter holiday – Tromso looks amazing! But the Christmas markets in Germany also look unreal. (Sidenote but – a double decker cable car?! Madness!)

  7. I miss a white winter so much! Also, I know I said it once but I’ll say it again. You are honestly the only blogger whose ads REALLY don’t feel like ads!

  8. Ahhh, this is making me feel so festive, Jenny! I’ve never actually looked for winter travel because I oddly have a phobia of ice. I am hoping to visit the Christmas Market on the Southbank this year!

  9. I am the same, I can’t stand the heat and would much rather it be cold and me wrapped up warm.
I have a trip booked for Edinburgh Christmas Market and I am *so* excited! It’s a gorgeous city anyway, but I can’t wait to experience the atmosphere.
My own city’s Christmas Market is meant to be bigger than ever this year, and it coincides with an exhibition I’m excited for so I’ll definitely be hitting up Newcastle in December too.

  10. I don’t like summer due to the heat but then I don’t like snow- there’s no pleasing me! Autumn is my favourite time as it’s plesantly cool, sometimes cold but not freezing. Christmas markets sound interesting though, as I’ve never been to one either, not even the Birmingham one which is not far from me.

  11. I’d absolutely love to go to a Christmas Market – we were supposed to go to one in Germany last year, among loads of other things, but my partner ended up doing his back in just before and we had to cancel the whole thing (£900 we’ll never get back and I’m still gutted about that). I’d also love to try skiing – never done it before but I think it could be quite fun. Greece or Japan would be my choice for that as apparently they are much less crowded than the more well-known countries!

  12. I’ve wanted to go skiing forever. I love snow and much prefer winter travel. Although my balance is terrible and I’m pretty sure I’d come home with broken bones. I’ve been to Paris in late November before so they had their Christmas markets on at the time. It was nice but I’d love to visit the ones in Germany x

  13. Looking at Courchevel or Meribel for my winter ski trip. Both fabulous places for all levels which suits me because as much as I love skiing I am still not that good 😊. Great post to remind me to start booking!
