Well, these are actually some of the reasons as to why it’s quite hard to find the perfect pair of sunglasses. The huge variety can be overwhelming and make it difficult to even know where to start.

Don’t worry though, our pals at Great Southern Sunnies have your back. They have put together some information about the 5 things you should take into consideration when shopping for sunglasses.

So, if you’re on the hunt for a new pair of sunglasses, keep reading.

1. What shape is your face?

Now, while we don’t want to put any restrictions on styles of sunglasses for you – you can wear whatever you like – there are just some styles of sunglasses that suit certain face shapes better than others.

So, before you dive right into pretty colours and cool designs, it’s a good idea to have an understanding of your face shape, as this will help you narrow down the styles to look for.

Your face shape will most likely be one of the below:

  • Square: this is where your forehead, jaw and cheekbones are all a similar size, and your jaw line will be quite angular and sharp.
  • Round: this is where your hairline and forehead, as well as your cheeks and jawline are all somewhat wide with gentle round curves.
  • Heart: your forehead is usually the widest point, with your cheekbones slightly smaller, tapering down into a narrow chin area.
  • Oval: this is where your head is longer than it is wide. The face shape will usually be somewhat narrow.

Once you know the shape that best describes your face, then it can be easier to choose a style of sunglasses. Square shaped faces tend to suit round and oval styles, offering a softening of their angular features; round faces look great in cat eye, rectangular or geometric styles, as they

provide some angular shapes; heart shape faces suit oval shaped glasses at they help to balance the face; and oval shapes tend to look great in square, rectangular or geometric shapes to add some angular shapes and wide the face a little.

2. What’s your look?

Now that you have an idea of the shapes of frames that work best for your face, now it’s time to think about your own personal style.

Do you have a “look”, like are you a little bit girly, a bit of a rocker, classic and minimalist? Ultimately, you want your shades to reflect your style and compliment it, so if you have a specific vibe you’re after, don’t be afraid to use sunnies to accentuate it.

If you’re not after a particular look, then you’ve got some real freedom on your hands so just have fun with it.

3. What are you planning on using your sunnies for?

Yes, we know that you want your sunnies to make it easier to see in sunny conditions, but are you after just an everyday pair for when you’re running errands or commuting to work? Or are you going to use them out on the boat or when you’re playing golf?

If you’re buying them for a purpose, this can help narrow down a few things. For example, if you’re going to spend time out on or around the water, then you’re probably going to want to think about polarization to reduce glare. If you’re going to use your sunnies while skiing, then you’re going to want something that can provide depth and contrast in bright conditions.

You might think that coloured lenses are just there to make your sunnies pretty, but the colour of your lenses can affect how easy it is to see in specific conditions and situations.

In addition to the colour of your lenses, if you have a purpose in mind, particularly one where you’re going to be on the go, like on a bike or running, then you’re going to want a pretty great fit. So, it’s a good idea to think about why you’re buying them.

4. How much protection do you need?

Not all sunglasses are made equal when it comes to the protection they provide. Narrow styles don’t always do very much when it comes to protecting your eyes and the skin around them. While some glasses are cheaply made and don’t offer full UV protection.

These days, most major sunglasses brands offer full 100% UV protection, so if you’re looking at a pair that doesn’t have 100% protection, we recommend putting them down and choosing a pair that does.

You don’t need to compromise on protection whatsoever.

5. What are your sunnies made of?

If you’re going to spend your hard earned cash on a pair of sunnies, choose a pair that is going to last you. Make sure you’re buying sunglasses that are made of materials that are going to suit the purpose you’re using them for.

Some common materials include polycarbonate, plastic, metal, glass and mineral glass. Each material has their benefits, such as if you’re quite clumsy or prone to dropping things, a pair of sunnies made from flexible polycarbonate might be a great option for you.

You want your sunnies to last, so you only want to buy ones with the best materials possible.

Now that you know what to take into consideration when buying a pair of sunnies, there’s only one thing left to do – and that is to buy a pair.
